Still Alive. [Prp]
« on: June 22, 2011, 10:21:11 PM »
[set a few months after the whole renegade incident, elias's death, etc.]

The queen had done a great many things in her short time as leader of this beautiful realm. She had found homes for the orphaned children, she had made sure that all the dead were buried and honored. She had promoted, she had demoted. She had rid the nation of the lingering renegades and accepted new and loyal recruits. She had sent wolves on missions, she begun to restore the ranks to their former glory. She had (at least hopefully) made her good intentions clear to the last tatter of the monarchy who might have held suspicions towards her. She had earned the respect of the noble people who called this place home. But there was one thing she had not done, and it was this singular task that kept her awake this moonless night.

She had failed to kill the monster.

What sort of knight was she, what sort of protector of her people? A demon still lurked who had tasted Inarian blood and found it sweet. This was an intolerable risk to everything she had, everything she loved. What had been sheer desperate patriotism from a wolf who was looking for a home grew during the months that had passed, and now she found herself yearning for that beast's death not only to protect a nation but to protect the individuals. Could not bear to imagine the horror that could be wrought here. That was one of the things about caring about people, that losing them could hurt.

Haven couldn't do that again. She would not fail this time, whatever obstacle was placed before her would be overcome by sheer gut wrenching dedication and drive and love. If Haven were a participant in a research laboratory, her file would say that she was intelligent, but not the most intelligent. That she was strong, but not the most strong, fast, but not the most fast. What her file would say was this - "Test subject is abnormally stubborn."

The trees hummed quietly in the wind in the background, the trees that marked the borderline of Inaria. Haven had made a habit of coming to the border when she could not sleep, double checking that invisible line, so fragile and wavering. She just had to make sure. The habit became a near obsession that had to be satisfied before she could rest. It never completely cured her doubts, but it did ease them some small fraction.

Usually, anyway. Tonight, Haven's hawk-yellow eyes reflected ominously in this cursed stretch of land just outside her domain. She felt something. Whatever it was was downwind, she could not smell it, but she had a feeling, a sickly feeling like the taste of metal or like cracks in her bones. Haven didn't believe in fate outside of what future you forcibly carved for yourself, but it felt like snakes twining about her feet, and Haven did not like snakes. This was her destiny she supposed, fight off each creature in the night, fend it off, only to return to the fray, each day a new test of endurance, each day a test that she would struggle with but inevitably succeed, returning to a restless but necessary sleep before emerging again for another attempt to slay whatever monster emerged.

She pinned her ears back and a growl gurgled from her throat, golden eyes turned a luminous, acidic yellow in the darkness.

"Everyone knows the story, don't they? About the monster that came to Inaria, one of the giant wolves, the old guard?"

"I've heard the one. And it had a friend, didn't it, a little auburn wolf, more bloodthirsty than even the monster itself?"

"That's what they say. Anyway, the two stormed in, killing anything that bled, even turning Inarians against each other so they could get to the king. They might have taken the whole kingdom down if it hadn't been for the brave queen that came to take it back. She rushed the monster and it roared but to no avail and soon she drove it from the lands."

"So whatever happened to these two, anyway? Did the monster ever come back?"

"... Not yet."

~

She'd been dreaming of that face again, picturing it often behind a vacuous gaze, as her horde meanwhile plotted skirmishes her body would pursue, even as her sharp and spotless mind remained elsewhere, lingering inexorably back at the invasion. Streamlining, analyzing, calculating, going over every gruesome detail with a cold and unshakeable compulsion. It all had a powerful hold over her despite the costume of freedom she wore, everything but a merciless fist gripping her hard around the throat, the obsession so strong she was sick with it. In the end, this had to have happened someday; it was simply inevitable.

Her returning approach was nearly silent, and in a land where the normal soundtrack of nature would have blended with those monstrous footsteps, it would have gone entirely unheard. But Inaria was serenely quiet at this hour, not unlike the wetlands within which she'd conquered a splendid slice, though here there was no impression of a thousand eyes watching unseen from the reeds, no mucky dangerous reek of the reptiles that claimed it as home with little reverence to the endless squabbling of their unwelcome lupine neighbors. All of the children dozing in their little beds, all of the ones who'd gotten away, all of the loners she could corner and murder, but this time Dragon was not here for them, never even crossing the border at all in fact.

Stepping over logs and crackly leaves, staying within a line of underbrush, she approached the golden paladin, watched Haven as she stirred and growled, her own pelt meshing with the sleepy darkness, awarding her only the faint outlines of markings, a jagged edge of burgundy here, the scythe-like swirl upon her sides there. Watched the rise and fall of her sides, scented the breath frosting from her throat, this bringing to mind a brief image of that throat gurgling and torn from ear to ear, but that was for later, that did not follow her script.

Dragon needed her alive.

Only when the uneasy growl passed back into relaxed quiet did the renegade lunge with every intention of seizing Haven in her jaws with the forward momentum, lifting her momentarily from the ground and viciously bouncing her head into an available tree trunk. Disorienting, paralyzing, and hopefully enough for Dragon to clamp teeth around that neck after all, closing just behind the ears, literally choking both distress howls and precious air from this queen until she felt... inclined to be agreeable with her dear old friend.

The sound from Haven's throat had buzzed in the air and then died, leaving only a sickly quiet and a queen with fear in every part of her except her expression. She knew that this darkness and this silence were pregnant with something terrible, that this night would birth nothing but sorrow, she knew it was Dragon because she felt the stench, did not merely smell it, she felt it in her bones. But there was something she did not know, and that was which direction the monster would come from.

In the dark, by herself, it did not matter that she was a queen. It did not matter that her pelt shone like the sun for there was no light for it to reflect. It did not matter that she had defended her territory last time, that fight had been during the light of day.

The monster reached out from under the bed to grab not at a child's ankle but at a monarch's throat. She felt the teeth latch on and as those huge, hot jaw began to close Haven gasped rather than screamed, took in as much air as her lungs would hold, and even as she felt the fangs begin to bruise her skin, she lashed out, using that energy to carefully to spin and bite whatever she could reach, bite it hard and unforgiving, settling for nothing less than mutilation. All this even as Dragon's momentum hurled her forward, tossing the smaller wolf off her graceful feet, slamming her head into the tree with a loud crack.

Haven had only a few seconds of consciousness left, and had a choice. She could try to struggle free, or she could try to warn her friends.

And the choice, the choice between what was quite possibly her own life and the lives of her kinsmen, was not a choice at all.

With what air remained in her strangled windpipe, emitted a gurgling bark, not knowing if it would be loud enough for anyone to hear, not knowing if Dragon had come alone or with an army, not knowing if she intended to slaughter them, slaughter every last one of them: the kind Beta, the cunning jackal-wolf, the bratty elite. Did not know if she would kill Jaromir, if she would kill Nikolai, Anateri, all of the children. Not knowing if she already had. Her stomach churned and it felt like she was being eaten from the inside out, this time not from Dragon's cold green stare, but from her own insecurities, insecurities that bit just as hard as the monster's teeth. What if they died what if they all died and what if it was her fault. Her fault again.

She did not know whether she had let Inaria fall this night, and this was her last, frantic thought as she felt to the ground quite unceremoniously.

No bodies littered the grounds here, but in her mind's eye she imagined them, stiff and still with throats or hamstrings or bellies mangled by marauding Inarians who'd seen the desperate last stand of those renegades and simply overwhelmed them with sheer righteous power. Dragon understood what the void of her old horde's absence entailed, the blood-reek so faint it would not have been detectable to anything sans a canine's blessed sense of smell. She knew what had happened and felt nothing for any of them despite the year she'd spent scheming and blitzing with them, sought no revenge for the fat hens who'd probably squandered their deaths just as they'd done to their worthless lives.

Apathy spared it no further thought but hatred hoped it had been terrible for them all. Like it was going to be for Haven soon. Dragon had relieved at least one renegade of such a precious burden, and might have done so to more if only she'd had the chance, but things were this way, not some other way, and so it only them she pursued now, only the golden paladin who'd in times passed hurt her and and driven her from the hemorrhaging kingdom.

Jaws that had murdered wolf after wolf after wolf of this queen's now closed on her neck as well, heartbeat steady as they together begin to struggle, Dragon following her thrashes as best she could to keep teeth out of anywhere vital. They grazed chest once, shoulder once, but the efforts were scattered and the end results more throbbing annoyances than they were mortal arterial gushings.

She'd return the favor, squeezing but not severing anything too important that pulsed inside throat, but skull apparently was fair game as it smashed with dizzying force against a rock. Dead green eyes had been gazing at nothing during the accosting, scarred face averted, but now they flicked in tandem toward Haven as though seeing her for the first time, weathered ears pinning back in some android mimicry of irritation at the gurgling cries for help, then straightening keenly for interloper footfalls sure to come. How brave of Inaria after all, how supremely noble, to let little pregnant Anateri be violently mauled at the borders and then trip over themselves to be the monarchy's footstools.

But it was over then, still with no savior in sight, and so Dragon at last released the unconscious knight, standing impassively over her helpless body. The muscles lining her jaw flexed, loosened, rested briefly. Haven was a worm before an eagle and just as easily killed. An anticlimactic murder, victim dying in her sleep. An efficient one. But exactly how many more deaths could keeping her close cause?

In the end, that would be up to Inaria.

Moving quickly, Dragon leaned down as her quarry started to breathe again, grasping her abused neck and dragging her powerfully away, never ceasing until forest became wetland and the trees became reeds and earth became grime and the sky above their heads would turn murky and thick and suffocating like something from a deep nightmare.

THREAD IS NOW OPEN FOR ANYONE WHO WANTS TO DISCOVER THIS AND POSSIBLY FREAK OUT.

Just keep in mind that Haven and Dragon are gone aka can't be caught. In this thread, at least~

It had been a while since it all happened. Moons had slowly been putting herself back into her routine, and a lot of things had happened since then. She had met plenty of new wolves within Inaria, she was part of the Council, and she had even confided in Haylyn. Things seemed to be slowly pushing themselves forward, and she was nudging them along with her muzzle. Things were still hard, especially with the losses she had endured. That they had all endured. But it was all she could do to move forward.

But some things hadn't changed. She still wandered by the borderline, both a habit and a somewhat morbid curiosity. Moons had begun this routine even before her kidnapping, and she had stopped it for a while afterwards. Recently, however, it was something she picked up again. Mainly for the purpose of acceptances, in which she had helped a bit. Now, it was just something she continued, and as amber eyes grazed the trees before her, memories flickered past her mind. Moons felt tense here, and yet she didn't make herself leave. Something was itching at her, and while she sometimes paused with paw in mid-air still, wondering whether or not she should just return to her den, she still continued forward anyway.

Night had already fallen by now, and her evening restlessness often had her go on walks. Tail flickered, and the Freifau paused again to sniff. Her nose wiggled, taking in different scents. For some reason, while it was usually quiet at night, this silence seemed more... dense.

Something she caught made her freeze in place. The first thing she recognized was the scent of their new leader, their Queen Haven. Seemed like she wasn't the only one that wandered the borders. But it also made her wonder whether or not something was up. Glancing around, she half-expected the gold female to appear amongst the trees. Nothing. Then another scent followed almost immediately, something that made her blood run cold: the blackblood. One of the enemies of the battle. It was a scent she recognized from the remains of the battle against the Renegades. It seemed too strong, like it was here not too long ago. Impossible... but was it really?

Even more alert now, Moons' heart began to race as she glanced around more fervently. Surely they hadn't fought... had they? She hadn't heard anything, no call for help. Stepping forward, she directed herself closer to where the scent was even more strong. And the signs were there. The subtle signs of a scuffle. She closed her eyes briefly, taking in this information and hoping desperately that she was wrong. But someone needed to be alerted. Others needed to know. The Council... it was important. What if she was wrong? Then she shook her head. No, it didn't matter. This had to be looked into. Tilting her head, the Freifau howled into the night, calling primarily for the members of the Council. The urgency was evident in her voice, even as she finished the call. Others may come, but at the moment it didn't matter. The Council just had to know.

Something had to be done.

Kita lay on Whitewind's Hill looking down over Inaria, her head resting on her paws as her half lided eyes scanned over the moon bathed landscape. She had been working hard after returning from the shattered packlands that once made up Nadir, and after getting the assurance of the Alphas of that battered, but not broken, pack. She had settled back into the routeens she had left behind before Elias had risen to power, mostly walking through Inaria and listening to the people, the gossip carried on the winds, and also looking for things that needed to be fixed or improved that she could bring before the rest of the Council, or even the Queen.

As a soft wind brushes her fur softly she smiles wearily, she has done much in the months since Haven had taken power. Watched Inaria start to grow strong again, grow full of life again. A deep respect was starting to form for the Golden Paladin that now held the throne. She was no Whitewind, but she reminded her much of the fiery spirit her Queen had in those dark times; the strong noble manner that it took to hold the office, and lead the Pack to greatness. Kita could see in this new Queen the strength to lead, and the wisdom to differ to the Council when she did not know how to proceed, this would serve her well.

Taking a deep breath of the cool night time air the Earten Dire's eyes start to slow close, her thoughts turning to Blaise. Perhaps she should visit him tomorrow? They had both been quite busy with their duties, perhaps she could get him alone and they could share a few quite moments? Perhaps he could catch her a field mouse? She'd like that...she had always loved it when he had caught her field mice for her to eat when she had been too busy to abandon her duties and catch something of her own. That thought made her stomach rumble slightly in light of the fact that she -hadn't- had something to eat in a while. Perhaps she should....

The sound of a sudden, frantic and urgent howl caught Kita's attention and before her mind could register the call for the Council, or even that it was Moon's calling Kita was on her paws and dashing down Whitewind's Hill as fast as her paws could take her. She didn't know why, but something felt wrong. Moons wouldn't call for the Council like this unless something was wrong, something was horribly wrong.

Dispite her thin malnourished fram Kita's pace took her through Inaria at a pace that otherwise she would not be able to summon without this feeling of something being wrong. She nearly tripped a few times in her dash, but recovered quickly as she dodged through the trees. As she neared the boarder her heart beat quickly, her body screamed out for air, but she fought through it. This was not much of a run for any other wolf, but she wasn't as young as she used to be, and she wasn't exactly in the best shape.

Bursting through the bushes near Moons she would stop and nearly collapse onto the ground. Panting heavily she looks at Moons, words for the moment escaping her as she simply breaths. Her eyes however are a diffrent story, they hold worry and fear. A desire to know what is going on would flow forth from her body language and from the look in her eyes. As she waits for Moons to speak she pants a few more times and then takes a calm breath in through her nose.

Its at that point she smells Haven...and something else...something...dangerous. It was the scent of a Blackblood, one of those who had killed Elias. She had smelled it before, during her tours of the areas that had been part of the battle, and this scent made her blood run cold with fear, and will rage, just as much now as it did then. Raising her head slowly Kita would look at Moons and look her in the eyes and speak slowly, calmly.

"We will wait for as many of the Council as we can, but if Jaromir or Kashmire are not here in the next five minutes, I want you to go and rouse as many Guards and Sentries as you can find, and have them rouse those they can find, if they have not already been roused by your call. I don't know whats going on, but the owner of that scent brings trouble, brings death. We cannot waste a single moment." She would walk over to Moons, and stand next to her... and look over at Moons, frowning. "Best stand next to you...I am no good in a fight...and...if that monster is still here...well.." she didn't want to think about the 'what ifs' right now..."

Had Inaria lost another Monarch tonight? Kita prayed that was not the case...she didn't want to bury another friend...another Queen.

Flashsnap had made a little bed next to where she slept in her den for Sulfur, his little bed close to the warmer end of the den. Flashsnap would always sleep in the direction of the mouth of the den in case someone not welcomed, or an intruder dared show their face. She kind of liked the little red-brown fluff curl up close to her gray and black fur, and she didn't mind the little boy's quirks - she thought they were cute - after all, he was just a little puppy.

But that day Flashsnap had set Sulfur back with the pup sitters while she went on her usual patrol. She promised little Sulfur she'd be back in time to make sure she takes him back to the den for the night, but a few recruits, mostly turned away, had caught her up. Night had fallen now and Flashsnap cursed to herself that now Sulfur was now probably waiting for her. That, she hated for the young boy.

But on her way back across the border to where Sulfur was being watched by the pup sitters, she jerked to a halt, violet eyes wide and body rigid. She turned her head - a scent was caught on the wind, the scent of the Queen. But that wasn't the only thing - it was the scent of a Blackblood. A Blackblood.

Flashsnap's body was now lit with the flames of anger, and her lips pulled back while her eyes gleamed dangerously. She momentarily forgot about Sulfur and kicked off the ground in the direction of the scents. But when she had gotten there, she slowed her body and her violet eyes scanned the area. The first thing she noticed was the two wolves - the Beta Female and Gamma Female. And the second thing she noticed was the scene - the earth held signs of a battle, and the scents that clung to it so clearly were of Queen Haven and the Blackblood.

Flashsnap's body, no longer alive with anger, suddenly went cold. Her violet eyes grew wide and her ears flicked back. Had Queen Haven, too, fallen to the jaws of a Blackblood. Why wasn't Flash there to help? Why?!

"We will wait for as many of the Council as we can, but if Jaromir or Kashmir are not here in the next five minutes, I want you to go and rouse as many Guards and Sentries as you can find, and have them rouse those they can find, if they have not already been roused by your call. I don't know what's going on, but the owner of that scent brings trouble, brings death. We cannot waste a single moment." Flashsnap looked up at Kita as she spoke, and now, the cold feeling that Flashsnap felt was slowly bleeding into anger. Was this the same Blackblood that killed the ex-King?!

"Best stand next to you...I am no good in a fight...and...if that monster is still here...well..." Kita continued.

Flashsnap stepped forward to the Gamma Female and Beta Female. "I am help protect you if need to be if... if this demon is still around. But, if you need me to do something other, just tell me." She wanted Inaria to get revenge, and to find the Queen. The war has only just begun.

There was only one thing night time was good for one thing and that was sleeping of course. Exactly what Jaden was doing and it felt pretty nice. A good old warm night was all anyone in Inaria needed. Sleeping in a soft pile of moss, under the stars. Little Pyre resting peacefully next to him. No better place to be within this sanctum. The months had gone by and the golden male had expected that people in Inaria had finally settled down and their dark months had finally passed. Haven was leading them into a new light, bringing this place back up from the ashes.

Ephriam would be happy to know this wherever he was.

A howl echoed across the land and shocked the boy awake. Dusty gray-brown eyes wide as he rolled over. "Whuuuu? Whaaaa?! OUCH!" The male said as he rolled a bit too far and his head met a rock, slowly easing himself up to a sitting position he'd rub the side of his head with his left forepaw. Scowling angrily at the rock until remembering what exactly had woken him up. A howl? What's going on here? Gray eyes looked over to the child with a frown, giving her a quick lick of love before setting off. Daddy will be back. Jaden rolled to his legs, shaking a bit from powerful push he needed to manage to get up with those sleepy legs of his.

The guard dashed off.

Wide eyes glancing in every direction trying to take in what was going on with each step. Put the pieces together and what do you get? However when he finally arrived to the scene, it wasn't all smiles and sunshine. Something was up, eyes bounced from Moons... he knew her or well of her and then to Kita who was talking to Moons about protection. Finally his eyes rested on Flashsnap, taking in her appearance.... her seriousness.

What happened here?

"We will wait for as many of the Council as we can, but if Jaromir or Kashmire are not here in the next five minutes, I want you to go and rouse as many Guards and Sentries as you can find, and have them rouse those they can find, if they have not already been roused by your call. Best stand next to you...I am no good in a fight...and...if that monster is still here...well.." she didn't want to think about the 'what ifs' right now..."

Teeth clenched and he could only imagine. The beast was back again. Last time he had met Haven, she was a real bloody mess... pun not intended. Blood here, blood there. A monster had done that and now a monster had done this. Maybe he was being brash, maybe he saw their protector slip away... maybe he felt weak and scared. That shell he had built up, seeming cracking to show all the layers. Show what he really was, just some scared kid. "We can't just sit here and do NOTHING." Eyes narrowed at Kita for the first time and then his gaze was slowly brought to the ground. "I'm sorry for yelling... But we NEED to go after her. This is our Queen.... The trail is still fresh we have a chance." He'd look up at the archduchess again, pleading.

If you're not going, I'll go on my own. Monster or not.

Blaise stared into the smooth black water, keeping perfectly still so his ripples did not disturb to glassy surface; the bright white stars and glowing moon were reflected perfectly in the ink - After the desert seeing this much water in one place was almost hypnotic. Around him the forest was dark, but not silent; there were still the usual soothing sound of the trees swaying gently in the breeze and the homely rustle of small animals digging through the leaf litter. Everything seemed so peaceful. Blaise lowered his head to drink, watching as the ripples fanned out from him, spreading across the surface until they reach the far bank and rebounded, crosshatching the water with waves, ruining the tranquil scene.

AWWWOOOOO!

Moons? Blaise raised his head from the pool, beads of water dripping from his wet muzzle, as he swiveled his ears to listen to the cry that spilt the night. A call for the the Council? At this hour? Blaise turned on his heel, bounding out of the shallow water, send up splashes of white spray that soaked his legs and underbelly and scrambled up onto the bank, slipping slightly on his wet paws. What ever the problem the urgency had been clear in the tone, something had happened, but what Blaise could not even begin to guess at - He certainly would never have guessed the truth.

----------

Blaise skidded to a halt as he saw Moons' shape looming out of the darkness in front of him, Flashsnap was there also, and what looked like Jaden, and though he didn't see her at first glance, so was Kita on the other side of Moons. He nodded to Moons and Kita, shooting the latter a question look, that mingled with concern when he saw her heaving chest as she panted.

Blaise started towards Kita, but a gleam of something wet and dark on the grass caught his eye, frowning he put his nose to the ground, sniffing it. Blood. His head shot back up and he looked round at the others wide eyed as the situation dawned on him. It wasn't just blood, by the scent it was Haven's blood. Nose back to the ground Blaise began to circle, Haven wasn't the only scent, there was another heavier musk, that was chillingly familiar. It had been all over Elais' savaged body.

"Not another one," Blaise growled, his lip curling slightly, his hackles rising; whether he meant not another Renegade or not another Alpha down, was left open to interpretation. "I thought we got them all," Blaise spat following the trail of scents and blood streak grass. Haven had clearly been dragged, but whether dead or alive it was impossible to tell - The only vaguely hopeful clue as to her fate was that the amount of blood was relative small. After a few paces he stopped, looking up in the direction the trail led, his gaze hardening. "What was she even doing out here?" Blaise asked, turning back to the others, hoping one of them knew. Why would she come out here, beyond the borders, after they had spent so long making those borders safe? There had to be a reason.

"We can't just sit here and do NOTHING,"

Blaise had missed what ever had gone before, but the instant Jaden raised his voice to Kita, Blaise turned, glowering, his lip still curled slightly in warning. Forget that Kita was a member of the Council and that she had served at the right hand of nearly ever monarch Blaise could remember, to Blaise she was Kita, just Kita, and no one, but no one, was ever going to get away with speaking like that to her while he was around. The irony was that, when Blaise was younger, he had been a lot like Jaden.

"I'm sorry for yelling... But we NEED to go after her. This is our Queen.... The trail is still fresh we have a chance."

Blaise expression relaxed slightly at that, Blaise agreed with Jaden on the second point, but unlike Jaden time and experience had finally been enough to calm his impetuous nature. "We don't even know she's alive," Blaise pointed out to Jaden, more kindly, though his words did still have a slight clip of annoyance to them. All them barreling off into the darkness after an unknown foe would be idiotic, and that was coming from Blaise, so it had to be exceptionally dumb. Perhaps that was why the Renegade had taken Haven, or at least taken Haven's body - Death was too certain, a body proof - Uncertainty, confusion, dissent - That's what would damage Inaria most right now. Why? Why were they doing this though? Blaise screwed his eyes up, blocking out any distraction as he tried to think, reason it through, as Mudfoot had taught him. Even for Blaise there were just too many questions. Wait. Distractions... Blaise snapped his eyes open as a worrying thought surfaced. What if this was all a big ploy?

"What if it's a trap?" Blaise asked suddenly, looking from Kita to Moons, "Remember when they attacked Elais?" Who could forget. "Some of 'em used the chaos that caused to snatch that pup." Blaise said quickly. "Before we do anything about this we better be making sure the borders are secure and that everyone in Inaria is safe." Blaise opined, he wanted to go after Haven too, but he didn't want to fall for the same trick twice. Fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice shame on me.

"Impossible t'know if Haven's dead or alive from this," Blaise said looking back at the flattened and bloodstained grass, "But we can't let this trail go cold or we'll never know. If you agree, I'll take a few others," Blaise nodded to Jaden at this, the kid had mouthed off at Kita, but he did have spirit which Blaise would have approved of more if it hadn't been for the former mouthing off. "See where this thing goes," Blaise put his suggestion to the other two members of the Council currently present, looking from one to another. "I'll be able to send back updates if there are a couple of others with me as well," Blaise added, normally he would volunteer to go alone, that was how he usually travelled, but they knew who they were dealing with now - He held no illusions that he, or any loner, would win a fight with them. Not that he intended to get in a fight, his only intention was to get some facts, something solid they could work on and then see where they should go from there. Currently they were stumbling around in the dark. Jumping at shadows was dangerous.

He'd been on the other side of Inaria when the howl broke the air.

Truthfully, Jaromir didn't realize from the outset how serious this was; he simply turned and thundered towards the source of the cry with the same old efficiency, some aftertaste of vague alarm sour in his mouth.  As he entered the scene, that sense of foreboding coiled in his chest.  The scents -- the gathering -- the disturbance, a struggle? But there was no blood, no viscera, no broken body strewn in the grass, no assailant in sight.  And so instantly the white tank was attuned to the voices, drinking in information with greed.

We cannot waste a single moment.  Best stand next to you...I am no good in a fight...and...if that monster is still here...well...."

"We can't just sit here and do NOTHING.  I'm sorry for yelling... But we NEED to go after her. This is our Queen.... The trail is still fresh we have a chance."

Strangely, the direness of the situation had the opposite effect on Jaromir.  Heartbeat slowed.  Brain became mechanisms, logic flowing in to fill the hole where security had lain.  It was the sort of too-sharp, too-clear peacefulness of a clear head, invaluable in an emergency.  He cared, perhaps he even dreaded -- but he would not be more useless panicking dogflesh in the middle of a crisis.

"WAIT."

The command, barked in a deep voice to Jaden, but perhaps also to everyone else involved.  CALM DOWN, the true command, but it was intangible, and nobody would listen, and so in its stead he gave them a direct order.  Were it not for the raise of hackles and frightening intensity of motion as the white beta stalked forward, one might assume him (all alertness aside) to be unaffected by the disastrous turn of events.

Not so.

In the absence of Haven, so he would be in charge alongside Kita -- perhaps even moreso, as people-skills were less valuable here than function-skills.  Think, think, broken record of necessity, be quick before they panic, he could not, would NOT LOSE HIS HEAD--

Blaise at least seemed to be helping secure the Jaden kid from running the eff off somewhere, Flashsnap didn't seem to be panicking, Kita was holding it together...for now, Moons was holding it together and would probably keep it, Blaise...Blaise was doing okay.

"What if it's a trap? Remember when they attacked Elais?" Some of 'em used the chaos that caused to snatch that pup. "Before we do anything about this we better be making sure the borders are secure and that everyone in Inaria is safe."

A terse nod of assent, and Jaromir would step in after those few barely-discernible seconds of assessment in a forceful attempt to take charge of the situation.  His voice was raised, that deep bark and growl of sound that would smother idle chatter.

"Gather the rank leaders, explain the situation, make them explain to their wards."  Telling everybody at once would be almost impossible to keep under control.  "Secure them, ensure none missing.  Subdue any who panic, and any would-be vigilantes."  There was no guarantee that Haven was the only victim, and they didn't need collateral damage.  The white wolf ignored an awful swell of hopelessness, refusing to acknowledge it -- that would not effect the change they needed.  "Blaise, take the elite guards and two soldiers."  They didn't need the trail to go cold, but more than that, they didn't need any more dead.

This, here -- this, now.  This would be his responsibility.  He couldn't fail.

Inaria's paladin couldn't die.

Acheron also entered, not long after Jaromir, stumbled upon the scene, looked at it grimly but with no surprise (history has shown that what can go wrong will go wrong, and people make this world an unsafe place) and would mostly observe what was going on with a critical and unruffled eye.  After Jaromir spoke, he'd pipe up with a brazen "If you're interested in more of an arsenal, I'd accompany you." to Blaise.

I hang my coat up in the first bar,
there is no peace that I've found so far
The laughter penetrates my silence,
as drunken men find flaws in science
Their words mostly noises,
ghosts with just voices

Your words in my memory are like music to me.

"Not another one," the Gamma Male had arrived not long later, nose to the ground, inhaling that deep scent that soaked the earth around where everyone stood. "I thought we got them all," the Gamma continued and Flashsnap just blinked her worried purple eyes, her heart beating tiredly, but racing, in her chest. "What was she even doing out here?" And when the Gamma turned to look at every one of them, Flashsnap just shook her head slowly - not having an absolute clue why Haven would even do a thing like this. She could have just left it for the scouts - for the guards.

"We can't just sit here and do NOTHING." Purple eyes turned to look at the golden Elite that was now standing in attendance besides the gray Elite, the Gamma, and Beta. Flashsnap actually felt... relieved that Jaden had arrived. Why she felt this, she hardly knew. Maybe it was because more Elites in attendance could help raise protection, or, or, they could look for their Queen with the more skilled wolves they had. But still, they were only a few. "I'm sorry for yelling... But we NEED to go after her. This is our Queen.... The trail is still fresh we have a chance." A black paw lifted in the air, and the gray Elite's mouth opened to say something to the golden Elite, but she quickly shut her mouth and laid her foot back onto the ground. Her eyes swept around the scene.

"WAIT." Head whipped to the next in attendance. Jaromir - he was appearing everywhere around here, wasn't he? But that was his job - he was the Beta Male after all.

"What if it's a trap? Remember when they attacked Elias? Some of 'em used the chaos that caused to snatch that pup." A quick intake of breath as the mention of the word 'pup' brought an image to Flash's memory - Sulfur. What would she do if Sulfur was ever kidnapped by beasts like that? How would she go back finding the young boy? They didn't even find the other pup that the monsters had stolen. "Before we do anything about this we better be making sure the borders are secure and that everyone in Inaria is safe. Impossible t'know if Haven's dead or alive from this. But we can't let this trail go cold or we'll never know. If you agree, I'll take a few others, see where this thing goes. I'll be able to send back updates if there are a couple of others with me as well."

We can't give up on Haven though. She wouldn't give up on any of us, the words were unspoken, only a thought in the mind of the purple-eyed Elite.

And then the next, "Gather the rank leaders, explain the situation, make them explain to their wards. Secure them, ensure none missing.  Subdue any who panic, and any would-be vigilantes. Blaise, take the elite guards and two soldiers." Excellent - so the gray and black Elite was going to be of some use. She cast a thankful nod to the Beta Male before turning to look at Moons and Kita. Sulfur would need someone to look after him, and even how much she despised the little pampered girl, she was taking care of Sulfur's sibling.

"Moons or Kita, if it's not too much trouble, could you please ask Haylyn to look after Sulfur for me while I'm away? I'm sure he's worrying too much. I know he'd enjoy the company of his sister." Flashsnap spoke and after their reply, the Elite would turn and walk swiftly over to Blaise. After Acheron spoke, Flash would nod her head to the Gamma Male. It was time for them to actually all work together, and maybe Flashsnap would grow with this. "Gamma Blaise, I am ready. Tell me what I should do."

Haven will be found - dead or alive - and avenged.

Who knew that this night would become so ruffled?

What had started as a simple end to a day suddenly turned into an all out questionnaire as to where Haven had gone, and what had happened to her. Certainly Moons was worried, and it wasn't long before she got her first response to her summoning howl. She had wondered whether anyone would take her seriously, and she got the beginnings of her answer when Kita practically burst into the clearing, panting for breath after her clear sprint. Head swiveled sharply to look at the Marchioness, concern drawing her eyebrows together at her state. It seemed like she had practically flown there. "Are you alright, Kita?" she asked, then noticing the worry and fear in her brown eyes. Of course not. Who was? They had a potential kidnapping on their paws, and highly likely from the very same enemy that had started all of this.

Shifting, Moons looked at the scene again, each inhale taking in the scents of both their Alpha and their sworn enemy. "Something's happened here, Kita," she began, concern in her voice as she looked over at her friend and fellow Council member. "Something terrible. Lady Haven's in trouble. That much is certain to me, as I'm sure it is for you." For now, assumptions were the only things that could be made. But still, something had to be done, and quickly. We cannot waste a single moment." A nod and a flicker of the ear was given at Kita's words, but other concerns rose up within her. Thus, she remained in place. "I still have a concern with that," the Freifau replied, amber eyes grazing their surrounding area as she spoke. "We lack in both. Severely. I'm afraid it might not be enough for what we may expect." Was it an over-exaggeration? Maybe, maybe not.

Kita walked over to where Moons was, and stood by. "Best stand next to you...I am no good in a fight...and...if that monster is still here...well.." Indeed. Ears swiveling forward in an alert mode, she listened as though looking for signs that the Blackblood was still around. Instead, what they got was Flashsnap, the Elite Guard appearing in the scene. And she looked just as worried as the rest of them. "I am help protect you if need to be if... if this demon is still around. But, if you need me to do something other, just tell me." A small smile was offered to the Elite Guard, and Moons nodded. "Thank you, Flashsnap. Your help is appreciated."

Then Blaise and Jaden entered the scene at about the same time. Both the Freiherr and the Elite Guard were ruffled by this, and it was expected. Moons looked over at the two, smiling grimly first at Blaise as he approached towards her and Kita. "Not another one. I thought we got them all." And so they had all hoped. He seemed to be exploring the area, taking more of it. "What was she even doing out here?" And her friend looked over, and Moons tilted her head in thought for a moment or two, before shaking her head with a worried expression. "I don't know, Blaise," she said a little quietly, ear flickering. "Making sure things were okay?" Clearly they hadn't been. It made her wonder whether Haven had known something and come here to check it out without telling anyone else. Would she? It was... possible. Then Jaden spoke up harshly, causing her to look over sharply at the Elite. "We can't just sit here and do NOTHING." A faint flash of frustration seeped through Moons, but it was enough to smother as she looked with furrowed brows at him, a faint warning in her gaze. Then he lowered his and spoke up again. "I'm sorry for yelling... But we NEED to go after her. This is our Queen.... The trail is still fresh we have a chance." Something they all knew very well. "We don't even know she's alive." Something else, unfortunately true. But it was also something Moons didn't want to contemplate too much on.

The Freifau opened her maw to say something, but it was lost at the Marquis' entrance and command ringing through the area. "WAIT." Inwardly she flinched a bit, and outwardly her ear flickered. Looking at the white male, she could see the calm determination in his eyes. It was something she rather admired about him, to be honest.

Whether or not there was silence would be up to the rest of them, but it still wasn't long before her rank male counter-part spoke up again. "What if it's a trap?" She directed her gaze at him as he looked at her and Kita. "Remember when they attacked Elias?" A flash of memory and pain sparked through her eyes, and her gaze flickered away from Blaise's briefly, but Moons forced herself to not begin dwelling on all of that. There were bigger things at hand. "Some of 'em used the chaos that caused to snatch that pup. Before we do anything about this we better be making sure the borders are secure and that everyone in Inaria is safe." A nod from Moons, but she remained silent. For now, at least. "Impossible t'know if Haven's dead or alive from this. But we can't let this trail go cold or we'll never know. If you agree, I'll take a few others. See where this thing goes." A nod again, and this time Moons opened her maw to speak. "I agree." Tail flicked once in assent, and she continued to listen. "I'll be able to send back updates if there are a couple of others with me as well."

Then the Marquis stepped in, and Moons looked over at him, wondering what his thought process was. Somehow, even here, he had that look of a leader. "Gather the rank leaders, explain the situation, make them explain to their wards. Secure them, ensure none missing.  Subdue any who panic, and any would-be vigilantes. Blaise, take the elite guards and two soldiers." It seemed like a good plan to her, and it correlated with what she had been thinking already. Her mind had been torn between keeping Inaria safe, and finding Haven. Now it appeared as though both bases were covered. Then she heard her name being mentioned, and she looked over at Flashsnap. "Moons or Kita, if it's not too much trouble, could you please ask Haylyn to look after Sulfur for me while I'm away? I'm sure he's worrying too much. I know he'd enjoy the company of his sister." At this she glanced at Kita. Would she be able to do it? She didn't want to ask, but after Jaromir's statement, she felt compelled to offer to go. After all, she did share the rank of Soldier when duty called for it. And the lack of Soldiers didn't help.

"I hate to ask, Kita, but would you be able to do that?" she asked her friend, whom she assumed was still next to her. Then she looked at Jaromir, directing her next statement to him as well as the rest of the Council. "As a Soldier, I'm going to offer myself for this task. Seeing as we have little as it is, already." Then her ear flickered and she heard Acheron's voice. She hadn't caught what he said, but surprise still flickered on her expression, not expecting one of her godchildren to be there. "Acheron??" she said, surprise evident. While happy to see him, she was still concerned about him getting involved in all of this. She padded over, moving for perhaps the first time, and gave him a brief nuzzle on the head in greeting. "What brings you here?" Oh, the things that were to come.

Occly encouraged to join in, but icly you can torn him apart. But he want to go.

The slight excitement of being finally part of Inaria was a long gone now. Inaria was changing for better, it is true, but excitement was replaced by the waiting, endless waiting for an assignment. Not so far ago he admitted that Inaria strives to excellence, but this, "this" was an serious obstacle on her way. He suspected that may cause Inaria to trip over, stumble her and her citizens in their efforts to reach it - but he wouldn't guess that it may cause their fall too. Blackmoore has sharp eyes and mind, and he wasn't deaf either. He saw the improvement, but he also saw the stains coloring the pelt of the mighty runner, unstoppable in his efforts to finally reach, catch and surpass... the thing called excellence.

Degeneracy of Inarian military was a thing hard to miss for careful eyes. It was an issue, it was a mentioned stain on the pelt of the aftermentioned runner. Kita gave him few carefully selectioned hints during his conversations with her, but they make him wonder. And they gave him a 'purpose' also... A reason to get up everyday without being easily bored by the lazy days. He was lurking at the borders, watching and thinking about the evidence he was gathering. Blackmoore knew that he most probably didn't sees the whole picture, but hell, he won't believe that just everyone go at the other side of it, at the side he was missing of course. For him, situation looked very bad. He was sure his father would be stripped off from the rank if something like this happen in his birthpack... Yet it's not said that full ranks guarantee safety, and Blackmoore knew this too well to be frank. Of course he didn't know that there's no one to be demoted, since currenlty Inaria lacked not only soldiers, but also an Marshall...

And tonight his aimless roaming was interrupted. He was frankly entertaining himself, doing analysis, thinking about things he would try do better and things he would try to change - if he get chance too of course. But howl shook all of this things into nothingness, especially because the howl was quite familiar. He didn't know many Inarians, but those he'd met up to now, stayed in his memory quite well. Especially those that exchanged few words with him, making his awaiting a little less boring. A distress signal make him wonder about the cause of the whole confusion, especially it was directed primarily to the council...

But it didn't said it was only for them...

He was far away, almost at the other side of Inaria - but that didn't discouraged Blackmoore. Stretching his limbs before, he pushed himself into stable, a little hurried pace. It was obvious where he was going to, thus he wasn't the youngest so he didn't expect to be the first to appear. But he wasn't the weakest either. During the last part of the "race", Blackmoore slow down and bent his head over the grass, sniffing trails of others that came before him. And there was few... Both familiar ones as well as not so much. And the overwhelming stench of the treespasser. He couldn't suspect that it belonged to the monster, Inaria's worst nightmare probably. But he certainly heard about that what happend earlier.

"What if it's a trap? Remember when they attacked Elais? Some of 'em used the chaos that caused to snatch that pup. Before we do anything about this we better be making sure the borders are secure and that everyone in Inaria is safe."

And he finally heard them. He moved in the correct direction, getting the picture of those that gathered in place where stench was the most intense. He smelt a little more subtle smell of the queen too. Blackmoore wasn't certain of his discovery until he saw the faces of ones that gathered when he closed to them. He easily recognized Moons and Kita. He wasn't sure of Flashsnap until he saw her purple eyes, sight of them bring upon his mind a very colorful SNAFU thought. He hadn't this thought from a long time... Yeah... Blackmoore noticed Jaden too, standing among the crowd with restless eyes jumping everywhere. His face was painted with emotions... This kid wasn't a hard riddle for anyone truly. Blackmoore guessed that others probably were having troubles to keep this one in place. And finally, there were two more that Blackmoore didn't recognized. Um... the tan one, sparked him the memory of the funeral, but white beta was a totall mystery to him.

*Situation Normal, All effed Up.

"I agree." Moons said, but then the white one stood into, issuing commands, bolstering them with iron will of his voice. Martinet - how lovely... Blackmoore thought during the time he was coming closer. His eyes catch also the view of another wolf, blackish youth probably.

"Gather the rank leaders, explain the situation, make them explain to their wards. Secure them, ensure none missing. Subdue any who panic, and any would-be vigilantes. Blaise, take the elite guards and two soldiers."

Blackmoore was enough close to be noticed but he hadn't guts to interfere the Marquis. It could be a foolish thing to interrupt such brilliant show. So far he'll restrain himself to just listening, if someone would look upon him, he will incline his head only in acknowledgement of the hierarchy. Flashsnap bring his curious look upon her, solving the riddle at the same time when she was offering her help to man that found to be Blaise. So that's how it looks... Indeed, Blackmoore didn't asked Kita for it, taking an offer of being directed to the man when there will be occasion. He wanted to ask Blaise about Lionheart, but right now it wasn't certainly a right moment to do so. It'll have to wait.

"Gamma Blaise, I am ready. Tell me what I should do."

"As a Soldier, I'm going to offer myself for this task. Seeing as we have little as it is, already."

Now it was the time, he made a slight move to bring attention upon himself, swallowing the sturdy rock thing that he imagined to have in his throat. He felt unease, nothing else, he stood before -almost- complete council after all. "With permission, I would like also to offer myself to this task... I think it would be reasonable to replenish the expedition with volunteers, like me, instead of taking the last remnants of an army with Gamma Blaise. Of course if that what I know from Marchioness Kita, and what I've found out - isn't an invalid data...  Sir Blaise's concerns are fully reasonable and I agree that youth have to be protected. And that's why I think why it would be a good option to keep the remaining few at their posts here." He didn't noticed when his instinct took over his body, but he definitely felt like be before military commission. Yhm, he felt like this, really. He can be thankful (or not) to his father for this strict behaviour. Maybe he wasn't best, after all he had some years on his back right now, but he still felt like a line soldier. Obey is a law for him. "As excuse for myself I can only say that after what happend before, Inaria can't afford to loose Queen nor anyone else right now. Inaria's position between other packs is already weakened. So I think that's a right time to say that : 'Inaria expects every man to do his duty.'*"

So here I'm. And everyone will agree that it's also our duty to retrive the queen, right? Dead or alive. Thus he still felt kinda stupid. If he was two years younger, the whole situation wouldn't be so bad-looking in his eyes. But to hell with this, I only notified my access for field operation. I wasn't begging. And he said that in, hopefully, correct fassion - like the inferior should when he speaks out of line. Oppinion preceding the explanation for stepping out of line. That's how it should be in military. Of course tone of his words was matching the respectful stance...

*Paraphrasing famous Lord Nelson from Trafalgar. <gosh> I always want to do thissss...

OOC: Fyi, Acheron and Malakai are going to end up elite guards in training, so I give them permission to join this as... um... one hell of a learning experience I guess haha.

He'd been far from home when Elias had died. On his hunts, more than likely, pursuing an addiction. Perhaps morbidly the murders had paralleled one another, weapons shining just the same, blood spurting just the same, victims rasping death-rattles and killers gasping and snarling frenziedly in twin shutterclicks of time. There was a knife of guilt, some horrible hateful blade wedged deep into subdermal tissue and wriggling painfully with every movement, that tonight would plunge deeper until it bit into viscera and cut some irreparable thing in the very center of him, its survival hinged on whether or not his saint lived. Whether or not he could save her.

Inaria was a good place, it couldn't have failed, this had to be his doing, had to be someone's fault, his fault, his fault, not the fault of these monstrous terrorists and his hatred was a coal gripped in a fist that burned him double for all he heaved it to burn others and maybe the wolves here would expect him to break or snap or scream as he arrived and listened and understood because he was the weird one the little one the suspicious one the one who sometimes disappeared with no trace but he was utterly silent as the world tried in vain not to unfocus --

-- if only because no seethe or writhing back of lips could ever express anything at all of how effing furious Kashmir was.

There was no hint of panic on the long muzzle. He appeared every inch as calm as frosty counterpart Jaromir (looks were massively deceiving) as he watched the wolves try to organize, mobilize, decide what to do, feeling as though they were all animated in slow-motion, that he was transparent somehow, that this was a dream. Something about his elite guards and Blaise. Something about standing together. Dainty paws were moving of their own accord and surely he was aware of this, but the jackal was fine with it; just hand the reigns over to body because it's probably better than brain having them right now.

And he found said white wolf. Came up alongside him. Spoke in his odd high voice that sounded almost absurdly tranquil and detached to his own ears. A slow, strange pause then. "We should enlist them instead. For help. But quietly." Didn't know how they'd react to being hunted.

Another pause, but this one was loaded somehow, yellow eyes scanning the controlled chaos as though seeing it for the first time.

"If nothing else... we make sure this never happens again."

Who battled for the True, the Just
Be blown about the desert dust
Or seal’d within the iron hills
