Muskets and Blades [Atticus, Shiva]

The repugnant stench of sulfur and natural gas marked the bubbling tar pits of Death Valley. By now the male had grown used to the smell, almost welcoming the odor as the scent of home. From a distance, the pits looked almost innocent, like dark mud or a murky pond. But the Slaver knew the dangers of them, knew that the noxious fumes of the natural gas the bubbled up from the surface could make one sick if they breathed it in too much. Knew that the tar was uncomfortably hot, although it was not the temperatures that were dangerous, it was getting tapped and drowning within the thick liquid that would kill a wolf.

Alaunos would sit on the embankment above the pits, looking down into the black depths of the tar. Violet eyes contemplating, debating with himself if Shiva was ready to meet the head of their house. Probably not, but he might as well get it over with, at the very least. Sneezing abruptly, the large blackblood would shake his head, the ruff of fur rippling. Thick shoulders shrugging, Alaunos would arch his neck, lifting his maw into the air and howling out a long, haunting note.

It was both a request and a summons. He could not order the head of his house around, for Atticus the male would send his request, calling to meet with the permanently smiling senior. For Shiva, there was no choice in the matter, and the demand for her presence was obvious. In this meeting, Alaunos would introduce his false bonded to his true bond. Her life would be in Atticus' hands now, and the normally jovial male would decide whether she was fit for his house. If so, then all was well for her. If not? Well, Alaunos had chosen to meet at the tar pits for a reason.

Where it's flat and immense and the heat is intense...

Atticus lounged in his den lazily, his massive black body stretching the entire length of the sandy hole that was his home. He lay on his side, the wounded side of his face laying in the sand and his good eye keeping watch for any potential threats. Laying there on his side, with that nasty scar out of view and his red eyes lidded lazily; the big wolf looked much like some over-grown puppy. Potential threats were few and far between for the massive and privileged blackblood, he was scared of very little. The rosa and...scorpions. Scorpions were scary as eff.

Since the Rosa rarely made house calls, he only had to worry about his little invertebrate nemesis. Even such, he didn't even really worry about that. It was just boring to lay in the shade with your eyes closed all day. So when the low keening howl hit his ears he bolted upright. Sand still clinging to his furry cheek where he had been laying on it. That was Alaunos, his permanent smile broadened and evened, the good side of his face stretching to match the other. Like some sick-humored stroke patient. It had been awhile since he had seen his bonded.

He rolled to his feet in a fluid, nonchalant motion. Blinking blearily as he emerged into the bright sun. It was hot today, the sun baking the ground like some relentless machine. Nevertheless, he blinked the spots out of his vision then set off at an easy lope toward the tar pits, making no real effort to hurry. Alaunos knew the senior, knew him well enough not to expect him to rush to his damn side whenever he asked. So he took his time, sniffing at a sage bush, pissing on said sage bush, sniffing a different bush, not pissing on that one. He eventually meandered his way to the tar pits.

The massive black frame of his bonded stood by the gurgling tar, standing there like some timeworn sentinel that crawled up from the tar. His fur matched the tar perfectly like he was shaped from it, and the red on his hide was only old bloodstains. Atticus grinned and called out "Alaunos!" he sidled up alongside him. Buddy-buddy. "How ya been? Phew, that tar stinks don't it. What does my little brother want today hmm...?" Straight to business was always the way in Oukoku, some stifled pleasantries then right to the questioning. Atticus wouldn't even wait for him to answer, his charismatic voice lilting through the words like they were all part of the same musical phrase. Atticus eyed the tar pit curiously, it's hissing voice calling to him.

All of Oukoku felt that tug on them, the sick vicarious pull of the tar. It just asked to have things...thrown in it.

It's barbaric, but hey, it's home!

The morning light stretched out across the lands of the valley, scaring away the creatures of the night and making it safe once again for the day time beasties to move around like they always did. Drops of sunlight scatter all about the forest awakened the sleep beauty. The female laid curled up underneath a tree, no longer did she search for a den or look for refugee with her mother. No, Shiva was a year now old enough to take care of herself much like her siblings. Jazzy green eyes slowly opened and a soft yawn escaped her. Hello sun, how far will you make me fall today?

Hell life, why can't you be better?

It was a bit over dramatic to say that Shiva was living a nightmare made real, maybe even a little cliche. Even so, nothing in her mind would convince her otherwise. Being bonded to a pig of a monster, only looking to benefit himself rather than her. Ohhh, only if she could bite him, maybe it would release some built up anger, or maybe make some more rage and well that was just bad. The girl was already a raging bull, she didn't need Alaunos' help with it. Her head lifted to the sound of a howl. Speak of the devil, her lips curled and her eyes narrowed into mere slits on her face. No...it was too early, the sun had just risen...why? She thought of blowing him off, and just laying back down or going off to hunt down some food, but she knew. Oh yes, Shiva knew that he'd hunt her down and peel back her eyelids as punishment for not going to see him.

Ass.

Dark paws moved slow across the ground, jaw locked shut and her movements stiff and jerky. She had no real interest to spend her morning with her bond let alone listening to the sound of his voice. Poor little Shiva wouldn't be able to stomach it, she let out a sigh as her eyes spied to figures by the tar. Moving up to them in those slow awkward
movements she'd stare at Atticus and then Alaunos, sitting a tad far off from them both. Eyes trailing to the ground. Was that his bond? Had to have been.... Welcome to the meeting.

Now when can I go home?
