some kinna circus freak [ RII / DRIFT ]

He had just been walking. There had been zero reason for the world to throw such bullcrap at him, fate had no right. But here he was, near face-to-face with one of the strangest creatures he'd ever seen in his life. Eyes wide with surprise, he watched the hell-hound... hell-cat? Hell-bird? Hell-beast. Beyond the Fringe, they had called creatures like this 'fiends'. There was said to be a little bit of fiend blood in every dog alive - it manifested in North, of course, as elongated ears and an enormous tail. Nothing like the oddity he saw before him.

Frozen in his tracks, he stared at the blue-yellow monster before him, brow furrowed in confusion, lost for what to do or how to act. Steadily, slowly, he took a step forwards, mismatched eyes scrutinising the deformed, bird-like face with a poorly disguised expression of bemusement. Had she seen him, yet? He cleared his throat, and attempted to make awkward conversation, despite his bafflement.

"Pardon me, madam," he began, quietly, "But what the eff are you?"

If she displayed no sign of hostility, he would quietly settle a good distance away from her, pulling his paws up close to his body and wrapping his tail around them tightly, as though to keep himself small and well-protected. A natural sense of suspicion made him wary of things he didn't understand, and she was an entirely new experience. Even the most hellion of the dogs back in Heim had not looked a thing like her.

"Pardon me, madam, but what the eff are you?"

The carcass's belly bulged awkwardly as the feline in question paused, her ears flicking back at his words. She pulled her head out from under the skin of her latest kill, staining her entire face red with the water buffalo's blood. It dribbled from her partially opened beak, a hunk of flesh dangling from her jaws. She swallowed it whole, throat bulging as the meat went down her gullet. Her teeth clacked within, a chattering sound that resembled nails on chalkboard as she slowly turned to face her intruder. The bloodied crest upon her skull rose up, her tufted ears following suit as they flicked toward North. Apple green eyes gleamed within the sockets as she tilted her head this way and that; quick, bobbing movements like a bird deciding how to quickly eviscerate its opponent. Drift unconsciously took a step forward as she lowered her head, the thrum reverberating within the hollowed horn and making her sound quite ominous.

That thick, fat tail gave a sharp menacing whump against the ground.

The hellion blinked, and cocked her head sharply to the left. Her little ears twitched as she seemed to actually look at him. Her entire body froze, and then her head shot straight up as her tail dropped flat to the ground. Thud! She startled warbling, musical notes that played randomly from low to high and in between. She clicked her teeth excitedly as she practically pranced on over to him, tail swishing behind her and moving from side to side. "Look at you!" She crowed, trumpeting the words from that horn and making everything just so much more as her voice boomed. She reached out with her long claws to touch his fluffy coat, almost sighing as she growled, "Chicks! Land is full of chicks, but where are dams?!" She seemed to forget she was literally drenched in the blood and flecks of meat from her meal as she immediately claimed him as her litter: rubbing her cheeks hard against his face, rumbling like a diesel engine as the rest of her body followed. Full body nuzzles for the smaller man that she now called kin.

Once this was complete, she stood only inches from him; looming above him as she looked around quickly. "Where is your dam?" She snarled as her upper lip drew back as high as it could. "Don't worry. We'll find them." Her dew claws released from their relaxed position as she embedded them in the ground, sucking in a great breath of air. Throwing her head back, the hellion threw her head back and called for North's mother. Her personal headset only extended the range, further than a wolf's howl could dream as her roar echoed in the sky. She cocked her head when she was done, listening, waiting.

When Keystone didn't reply?

Drift threw a fit.

She pulled those claws back up and stomped her feet, tail slamming and letting out a series of sounds that made garbage disposals resemble symphonies. "WHY IS LAND WITHOUT DAMS? WHERE ARE THE DAMS?!" She didn't understand North was an adult and parent. All she saw was an enormous child left unattended by a chaperone, which meant she had no choice but to take him back home. Or keep him. That was tempting! She chirred, soothing notes as she unruffled those feathers. Attention back to North, her eyes widened at his appearance. "Oh! Oh, I'm sorry little one! I'll fix this, yes! Fix, fix fix for the pretty boy!" She sing-songed the words as she began to try and groom North with her beak, still singing little ditties and tunes she sang for her cousin's children. They liked it, so should this one! "Have to keep you up so you can keep your flock, yes? Yes! I miss my flock."

She hummed, sad for only a moment before she trilled and kept up the good work.
