prodigy [ RII / CATO ]

North had been watching his son for a few minutes.

Regardless of how short the unfortunate boy's legs were, Cato had undoubtedly grown. Attitude aside, he had blossomed into a mature young man, a capable tracker and valuable Saboran - North was proud. The concept was still strange, to him. Merely months ago the fiery little hound had been a rambunctious child, scurrying around his mother's long legs, tripping him up and frustrating him. Rambunctious he still was, but he was so much more as well, now. The merled dog watched in silence for a little longer, ears pinned back against his skull, lost deep in thought. Eventually, he rose to his feet, and revealed himself, sliding out of the undergrowth.

"Cato," he said, softly, greeting his child with a half-smile and a nod. It was unusual to get a smile out of the man, even towards his family. But today, he offered one, and padded quietly up to the crimson Kestrel, pressing his considerably taller body against the other. Cato smelled of family, of home. That, he hoped, would never change.

"What have you been occupying yourself with?"

The question came with a tone of challenge. He liked to know that his children were still ambitious and curious. He had not raised them to be tardy. The lazy didn't survive. After a moment, he sat, mismatched eyes focused unblinkingly on his son as he waited, expectantly, for an answer. When one came, he would listen attentively. The large tail curled neatly around his forepaws, enveloping them.
