riverlands [ RI / OPEN ]

Saboro had been eerily quiet. It didn't sit right with the Kestrel, whose acute hearing was far more used to the heavy buzz of jungle wildlife, an incessant drone of insect hum, bird song and thundering rain. Something felt off about the place, lately, though no logical side of him could find a reason. Perhaps the rainforest cycled in more ways than its weather: with the heat of summer came a silence of slumber. A siesta sounded good, but he was busy, traversing the borders. He was no border guard, but the world outside of Saboro was his domain. He'd spent almost as much time outside of the packlands has he had within, and he often found it soothing, when within the Saboran borders, to remind himself that the world beyond still existed. It was easy to forget: Saboro liked to keep its inhabitants occupied with stresses within.

He stood silently beside the Ravine, frowning at the forest that lay on the other side of the endlessly deep, endlessly wide canyon. He recalled the escapees he'd seen running, aided by foreign strangers, recalled the sight of his own brother being dragged forcibly into the territory. It seemed like such a long time ago, now. Another world. And yet, it could happen again. The borders were too quiet, with the smell of sentries distant - where was the Saborako? Where were their sentries? He made a mental note to mention the absence to the Peregrine. Perhaps she could pass on the message to the superiors that North had no business speaking to.

North shook his head, and continued walking, listening only to the distant roar of the Ravine's deep river, hidden somewhere within the depths of the crevice. The lull was interrupted, a short while later, by the sound of footsteps. Ever-paranoid, the hound whipped his head around, narrowing his eyes, eager to see who was approaching him before they came within range. He relaxed a little, giving a curt nod to the newcomer.

"Evening," he greeted, quietly. "Do you have business at the Ravine?"

A rather suspicious question, but a good one to ask. Since the eruption, the Ravine had been a place to watch. It was a gateway to the world beyond, the world that Saboro longed to keep its members away from. Ironically, the world that North found himself often working within. He felt it was somewhere within his jurisdiction to ask, therefore, though his tone was not accusatory. Merely curious. He remained standing, even if the company seemed friendly, forever on-edge and forever wary of outsiders, tilting his asymmetrical head inquisitively as he awaited a reply.

Katrina hated the quiet, the lull that had settled over the red jungle didn't sit well with the ignis dire. The Jackdaw padded silently through the second ring, heading towards the ravine to clear her head. She found that she liked to sit at the edge of the ravine and consider the fate of the traitors who had turned coat and ran during the eruption. She would sit there and wonder what happened to her mother. Had she really simply disappeared, had she died in the eruption, or had she turned coward like so many others had and fled the jungle?

Were the all really foolish enough to think they could truly escape the curse of the red jungle? The curse of the red tattoo would follow them no matter where they ran, no matter where they decided to hide their scarlett markings would betray them. And one day she would be there to descend upon them, one day she would track them down and hunt them like the pathetic creatures they were.

She frowned when she saw the figure sitting in her spot, silently considering the Ravine. Katrina halted for a moment, considering whether or not she should turn and walk away. But curiousity drove her forward, the need to know what he was doing and why he was here pushed her towards him and she closed the distance. Kat took a seat beside him and stared down into the canyon, wondering how long it would take a wolf to fall from such a height and crash upon the rocks below. She said nothing, comfortable with the silence between the two of them as they each entertained their own private thoughts for a moment. He was the first to break the silence.

"Evening," he greeted, quietly. "Do you have business at the Ravine?"

"I could ask you the same thing." She rumbled softly, her husky voice hollow and flat. Her burning amber gaze flickered towards him once or twice before she focused her gaze on the forest on the other side of the gaping canyon. "For me, it's curiosity." Katrina tilted her head, pursing her lips together thoughtfully as she narrowed her eyes. "How could so many cowards have called this place home? Don't get me wrong, I don't mourn the loss but it's just strange to think that even your neighbors, you family, even, can stab you in the back if it meets there needs." Her expression turned sour, "That's not what Saboro is suppose to be."
