Another day, another gift for the Bosslady. This time he'd wandered farther than he typically would away from the little family of witches. There was a desire to see the world a bit, and so he was slowly branching his explorations further and further out. But Traveler always came home, he came back to Lorelai, she'd taken him in, she'd raised him with her little party of witches and he often felt himself trying to be gracious and failing. So instead of pansy words and mushy crap, the large Fringe simply brought her little trinkets for her "witchy crap". He took pride in such things, and made a serious effort to find her something new each time. So far he'd taken her flowers, feathers, and a weird looking stone but he could always do better! With a huge lopsided grin he began to move through the lower land of Gemini. Traveler had scented the border but disregarded it, he knew little of pack life and wasn't really concerned it he hurt someone's feelings. After all, as far as he was concerned, crossing a border just made people upset and nothing else.

Honey orange eyes had originally studied the glass in the fields, toying with it with his paws until he accidentally cut his toes and decided it was not an acceptable gift for the lovely Lorelai. Perhaps if he had something good to carry it with, but right now Traveler carried everything in his mouth so he imagined that would be an exceedingly unpleasant experience. He didn't want to be in pain, and he was already hurting a bit with his paw bleeding slightly. The giant Fringe limped slightly, taking note of the large structure up in the distance, a wall of some kind, though he'd never seen one. It interested in greatly, what if he could just give her this thing? It would be awful heavy to carry though, he laughed to himself as he touched a still slowly bleeding paw to it. It would leave a partial print on Gemini's wall, before he decided that he needed to find somewhere to get past it. He traveled softly, the sun now rising above him directly in the sky, it was a little hot on his dark fur. The boy shook it off, trying to walk with an exaggerated swagger despite the limp.

Eventually he was panting, a small amount of drool slipping from his jowls as he finally came to the opening in the wall. The boy froze then, eyes finding the two skulls, one had a flower stuck in it's socket still. Traveler sat and looked up at them, studying them, their shapes, sizes, these were wolves or dogs or some kind. One seemed to be almost his size, but the other, meh. Admittedly, it made him a little cautious, the coward in him was tugging at the invisible collar and leash. Leave, go away, bad boy, bad! Instead he remained, furrowing his brow at the Kingslayers, "I bet that's a bitch huh?"

Century wandered happily around Gemini's lands. He wished he had a friend to play with, or that his siblings weren't off having adventures of their own, or that mama wasn't so busy being strong and awesome, but all of those things were true, so instead he was hopping jovially after a butterfly on his own. Every now and then he would glance up at the clear sky for a few moments, eyes sparkling, but then he'd remember the butterfly and have to run to catch up with it.

He followed the red butterfly until it decided it had enough of his games and flew up and out of his path, high up into the sky. He pouted as he stared after it, wondering what he was going to do now. All the adults seemed so busy lately, and they'd all been talking about that big weird thing that auntie Akira had built. Century stared at it in the distance and tilted his head, blowing tufts of hair out of his eyes. It had just grown in, practically overnight, and while he liked it, he also hated it. It made him different! As if his bright red eyes hadn't done that enough anyway...

Oh, yeah. The wall. It was big and imposing in the distance, sure, but it was... kind of ugly, in Century's opinion. No one had really explained what it was for, besides to keep them safe, but... How was it supposed to do that? It wouldn't keep the rain or sea out, it was on the wrong side. It wasn't like a den, or like the big healer's tree, it didn't have a roof or anything. It was just. Big.

Century chewed the side of his cheek and frowned at it, then puffed up his chest and huffed, deciding he was going to go check it out. It couldn't be that useful! Besides, Century was going to grow up and protect Gemini, just like mama, so they didn't need some stupid wall. He bounded over to it eagerly, completely disappointed to find it was only dead, motionless stone. What were they supposed to do with that? It wasn't even cool, like the castle that Skylar talked about finding with Maia!

"I bet that's a bitch huh?"

Small white ears perked up, and he made his way over to the gap in the wall, looking out at Traveler with wide, excited puppy eyes. Was this a new friend?! He didn't seem busy like all the other adults, either! "What's a bitch?" He chirped happily, and then, without waiting for an answer, "Wanna play?"

As he stared at the Kingslayers, the son of the King appeared with beady red eyes. Traveler didn't notice him coming up, honey orange eyes staring into the empty sockets of what was left of Cancer. It was almost like blue eyes were staring at him back, gurgling growls in another plane didn't reach his ears. Were they hers? Or someone else's? It captivated him, it held his feet from moving over the line, almost powerful. Somewhere the coward was still tugging at his leash to come back away from the wall. The wall in the middle of a desert plains, the wall with two skulls adorning it's entrance (or exit?). Something about this place screamed at his senses, but he was locked in a staring contest with the skull. The final flower that had been resting in the skull finally lost it's battle the wind, and it slipped away, his stomach sank.

Thankfully the sound of a small voice broke up the trance he'd been caught in. He jumped slightly, ears swiveling towards Century and meeting a very young face who asked a very adult question. "Oh crap! Um... It's a bad word. Y'know yo--" as if 'crap' wasn't a cuss word, of course it seemed that Century wasn't particularly interested knowing the answer. Which was good because Traveler would have eventually gave up on telling him it wasn't a nice thing to say and told him a very dudebro type of definition. Now the black, white, and red child wanted to play. Play? Really? He blinked softly for a moment before grinning at the boy. Traveler was still a child at heart, he was just barely a yearling as it was. Honey orange eyes locked with Century's bloody red again, play sounded like fun, "eff yeah kid! What kinda game you wanna play?" With that the skulls couldn't hold him back, he bounced forward through the gate into the inner lands of Gemini.

He'd glance back at them lackadaisically, before focusing on the kid, "Y'know why them skulls are hanging up there kid? Cause it's kinda effed up really..." Though he wouldn't linger on it, they were at his back now. "Name's Traveler, what about you kid?" But now he too wasn't really waiting for an answer, more excited to play and look around for something to eventually take back to Lorelai. But Lorelai could wait couldn't she? It wasn't often he found someone closer to his mentality (oh Traveler) and someone who wanted to play. As far as he knew, he'd be going home to the Bosslady tonight.

A bad word? Really? Century didn't know that words could be bad! Poor sheltered boy. He made a mental note not to say it anymore. His tail immediately began wagging at approximately the rate of a thousand times per second, hoping excitedly in place. "Really?!" He yipped, grinning widely. Oh, what game could they play? Hide and seek? Tag? Wrestling?? Chasing butterflies?! There were so many options!

"Y'know why them skulls are hanging up there kid? Cause it's kinda effed up really..."

"Huh?" He looked up at the skulls, his mouth agape momentarily as this was the first time he'd noticed them. They were spooky, and it felt almost like they were looking down at him... "Nope!" He offered, ever chipper, ignoring what sounded like whispers in his ears. He had no clue what the skulls were there for! Maybe they were part of what made the wall so cool that all the adults loved it? He had no idea that the skulls were a warning that history wouldn't repeat itself. How could he? He didn't even know they were the skulls of the ones who'd murdered his father.

"Name's Traveler, what about you kid?"

"I'm Century!" He said, ever excited, finally deciding what game he wanted to play with him. "Do you like tag?" Of course, he'd never make someone play a game they didn't want to, but tag was fun! There was running, and jumping, and tagging and--it was just fun!

There was no harm in a little bit of fun, right?

The gears in the boy's head were clearly turning, whatever gear that triggered his tail had went haywire. It reminded him of his own childhood, before the event that ended in his living with the witches. It was happy, and Traveler's own dirty tail began to wag in unison, together they could have made a small tornado. Two wolves wagged their tails in Gemini, somewhere a hurricane hit a small city. Damn it Traveler! A huge smile smeared itself across his face as he looked at Century, who was just absolutely excited to finally have a playmate it seemed. It had been a long time since Traveler had a playmate too, it made him think of his little brother and for a moment his smile faltered and his tail slowed. Honey eyes darkened in memory of his brother but it quickly livened back up, hoping the child wouldn't notice his somber mood swing. When the child yipped excited, Traveler yipped back in a tone as close to Century's as a mature male could hit, "crap yeah kid!"

The question about the eerie skulls seemed to catch the boy off guard, he looked up and was clearly confused. Had he never seen them? Or were they simply not that important? They didn't seem to bother the boy though, perhaps if he knew... the Kingslayers were calling to him. Thankfully Century was of a sound enough mind, or a naive enough one, to brush off the purrs from across the veil and dismissed them. Not even the slightest clue, and he certainly didn't care, so Traveler just smacked his lips, "Haha a'ight kid, sounds good to me. They're creepy as crap anyway." Shrug. They were moving a bit now, and he was panting a bit harder now. "It's hot as balls out here." He snorted, shaking his fur and watching the boy think. Century, what an interesting a name, of course it was no better or worse than Traveler, he liked "Kid" better.

Finally the boy decided what he wanted to play, tag, tag... The kid wanted to play TAG? TAG WITH THE LONG LEGGED ADULT? TAG? "Hahahahahahaha! Sounds like a effing plan kid!" Traveler could dominate at tag, and he would because he wasn't old enough to be in the mentality of letting the child win just because it was a child.  Of course, he'd give Century the start, and as soon as he'd agreed, he'd jump off to the side and gallop slowly for the child to chase. Somewhere along his retreat from the big scary little child, he reopened the cuts on his toes and pawpad on one foot and staggered, now would be a good time for Century to tag him!

Traveler was the best adult ever!! HE was just as excited to play with Century as Century was to play with him, which wasn't a common thing for adults, not with all the energy Century had cooped up in his little body! His siblings helped take care of some of his energy, but most of them had split up in pairs early on, so he really only got to see them in the mornings before they left the den and at night when they all came back. Century was a little lonely, honestly, but he didn't let it get him down! Or, at least, not much, anyway.

"Yeah, they're kinda spooky!" Kinda being an understatement. Century was glad that Traveler wanted to play, because he really didn't want to stay around the skulls for longer than necessary. They sent shivers up his spine if he thought about them for too long.

Good thing he was easily distracted. "It's not that hot today! It's been a lot hotter before, especially before it storms! The air gets all heavy and wet and--" Wait, they were supposed to be playing, not telling stories! Just then Traveler darted off, and Century let out a bark of excitement, immediately giving chase. Century quickly realized that Traveler's long legs were going to cause him problems, but he didn't let that dampen his spirits--he could run all day and not get tired! Probably.

Traveler stumbled a little bit, and Century ended up bounding headfirst straight into his hindquarters. He bounced back onto his butt, shaking his head a little at the impact and then grinning up at his big red friend. "Are you okay, mister Traveler?" He asked, and when Traveler no doubt gave confirmation that he was, Century jumped back up to his paws, ail once again going twelve thousand miles an hour. "Good, 'cause you're it!"

And then he was off again, giggling the whole way.

Century seemed delighted at the large brute's acceptance and excitement at the idea of playing. It made Traveler wonder how often anyone played with the boy, if he had any siblings to frolic with, or if they pushed him away. But Traveler wasn't the sort to linger on such things, and certainly not the sort to vocalize them often, if ever. So instead he offered a big roaring yawn, smacking his mouth closed like an alligator, and getting into the play pose while Century thought about the skulls. 'Kinda spooky' the boy said, spooky was right the way they stared, but Traveler was more interested in why they were there, "Seems barbaric," oh if he only knew. If he'd only heeded. Would Century know what 'barbaric' was? Would he find out shortly? All Traveler knew is his ass end was waving up in the air waiting for the boy to finally snap into play mode.

But instead the little prince decided to be a weather forecaster, and started speaking quite thoughtfully really on the temperature and it's causes. Too bad the large Fringe wasn't in a thoughtful mood, and he took this moment to his advantage, while the boy was deep in thought, to spring away. He was practically bouncing along the terrain, it was much easier on the feet than the harsh lowlands had been, but he still re-hurt is paw. As he stumbled, he felt the boy come ramming into his hind end like a bull elk in rut. Century wasn't very large, especially not compared to Traveler, but the brute felt the impact all the same. Honey orange eyes looked back at the child, probably slightly dazed, sitting on it's butt staring at him. Then the boy asked if he was okay, and the red and brown male bellowed a laugh, "crap kid, I was gonna ask you the same!" But before he could say anything more as an affirmation, the boy decided they were both okay and bounced up claiming that he was now it.

"Oh yeah!? OH YEAH?!" he boomed confidently, raising to chase after Century now. The little voice that would typically stop someone from continuing to hurt themselves was being drowned out by the play drive. Bloody pawprint after pawprint dappled the ground around where they were playing tag. But Traveler wasn't a kid-friendly man in the sense that he wasn't going to let Century win for the sake of letting him win. Traveler believed you earned it, and it didn't matter how old or young you were. What a proud moment for Century if he managed to beat the long legged Fringe at tag would that be! It would be quite the self-esteem booster that's for sure! So the bigger boy didn't hold back, he galloped up to Century and swung out a paw-- coincidentally his bloody one-- to tag that boy, hoping to hit his upper back or nap of the neck. Unfortunately for Century, Traveler didn't know much in the way of controlling his strength so this was going to be an undoubtedly strong hit should the boy not be able to move out of the way.

If the 'tag' landed, and Century bowled over, which was the most likely chain of events, Traveler would laugh deviously. Ignoring whatever blood may have smeared across the white of the boy's upper body, he'd bounce over to step atop Century, grinning like a fool,
"Hey Kid, you're it!"

Century giggled at Traveler as he ran away. He was always okay! Even when he wasn't, he could at least pretend. He had to be strong for mama and for his siblings!! No one had ever told him that, of course, at least, no one living had put that thought there. Maybe it was something he'd picked up upon once in a dream? He wasn't sure, but once the thought was there, it was stuck. He was such an impressionable young boy, but also so, so stubborn.

He cried out in a shrill puppy scream of excitement when Traveler finally gave chase, his little paws hitting the ground as fast as they could to carry him away from the long-legged adult. He made up for short legs with boundless energy, but still, Traveler had the advantage of being able to cover much more ground per stride, even with his injured foot. Century really didn't stand a chance of winning the game, but really, who cared? It was still fun!

Century let out a surprised yipe as Traveler swiped at him, blood smearing across his shoulder and the nape of his neck as he went tumbling through the grasses. He landed on his back with a fit of giggles, completely and totally unharmed. Century's front paws pushed at Traveler's chest when he came over, still giggling happily. Then he noticed the blood. A look of wide-eyed puppy concern took over his features as he looked from Traveler's paw to his face. "Are you sure you're okay mister Traveler?"

Now, to an outsider, the scene probably looked very different. It wouldn't be immediately clear that Century himself was not the one bleeding, and the look of concern on his face could easily be interpreted as fear. The shrill squeal from early quite easily misinterpreted as one of terror if someone wasn't really listening. Really, though, they were only playing.

This is now OPEN!
All members of Gemini are welcome to join, but please keep this information in mind:
• Traveler is a lot larger than Century, as Rhiow phrased it "almost Cancer sized". They are playing quite rough, after smacking the child to tag him, he is now smeared with the blood from Traveler's paw pad. From a distance, this looks a lot like Century is in grave danger from a border attack, just like his father.
• Gemini is consent, but I am aware, given the situation that Gemini would not be polite with him. I fully expect that many members will go "full Saboro" on him and that he will very likely be in real danger. Keeping this in mind, I do have a list of things I do or don't mind having happen to Traveler:
•DO: feel free to bite, scar, break bones, make his ears ugly, remove his tail, etc.
•DON'T: do anything permanently harmful such as completely remove his ears, eyes, or vital limbs. also please don't kill my child.

Someone is welcome to come into this to break it up before Traveler is too badly hurt! I know Witch said they'd try to get Akira in, but I don't think they'd have an issue w/ someone else stepping in? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Ideally we'd like for everyone who wants to pop in to be able to, however if it gets too big without someone coming in to stop it, we reserve the right close it momentarily until that can be sorted out.

Zin was diligent in his work, unassigned and unofficial though it was, he moved with self appointed purpose. It was a therapeutic as it was unhealthy, but he was content in the devotion he'd found here. Gemini felt worthy of protecting, even if they'd not yet asked it of him, it was only fair, giving back in his own way. He was doing his rounds, more precise and more obsessive than the day he'd started them, learning the territory as he went, tailoring his personal patrol as he went.

He'd wondered if the wall had been doing its intended job, leaving less need for additional defenders to be added to Gemini's ranks. The young prince he'd first encountered had expressed their need, and Zin was quick to learn just the smallest hints of what Gemini had suffered from, their losses hit the royal family hard, and the rest of the pack suffered along with them. He empathized deeply, and while his own personal tragedies would not be changed, he could most certainly stand to prevent other families from being torn further.

It was only shrieks that could put a stop to Zin's dutiful pace, and for only moments, they were spears digging deep into his heart, tearing his mind to a different time, a different place. There was no time to dwell and fuss over his own troubles, Zin snapped to, bodily shifting toward the cries. His focus drew from his place along the outer wall toward its entry point, taking in the distant details in seconds. A child, a stranger, and blood. His feet were moving before he began to form any coherent plan, all he knew was he needed to be there.

Zin moved with the speed of a father wanting to defend his own children, exerting what strength he could, to powering directly toward Traveler. In that moment he saw no distant white ghost at the edge of his vision, instead haunted with the cries of children. No more would be lost. Barreling closer, Zin would drop his head down and throw himself with all the force of his sprint toward Traveler's side and shoulder. Should he make contact, his intent was simply to separate the intruder from the child, and hopefully take him off his feet.

If Traveler should hit the ground, Zin would be quick to try to recover himself from his own impact, mindless of anything but the stranger. He would move in above him, large paws willing to stand atop him should they be able to make contact. Growling would build low in his chest before taking his place, eventually a snarl pulling back his lips to bare his teeth. He said nothing, no question, no chance to explain, no warning more than the position he'd place himself in either above Traveler, or at the very least between him and Century.

You will not hurt him, You will not take him away, I WILL NOT LOSE THEM.

[Tries to knock Traveler to his side/back, if he does, he'll try to step on him and snarl in his face. If he doesn't get knocked over, Zin will plant himself in front of Century and snarl at Traveler.]

Lev Malakh, although a trusting mother, she was a fiercely protective mother. She had taught her children of the dangers beyond the wall, and after the completion, she thought she could ease her mind of the worries. A repeat of Tauro's death was constantly on her mind with them, and she desperately hoped Skylar had learned his lesson. She hoped none of them would do the same as their brother, to take his mistake and learn from it.

She could only hope.

As the Valkyr traveled up and down the wall as a surrogate ranger, the cobblestones beneath her paws and the land spread out to her, Lev Malakh kept her golden eyes ever so watchful. She had pledged to keep the borders safe if the King was not in any particular danger. Lev was indeed Akira's safeguard, but Jonas always kept to her side as well. Instead, the Valkyr would patrol the wall, standing high atop and watching for any intruders that were not intimidated by the skulls that decorated their gates. The fiends that took away her children's father, the beasts that took her lover.

And as she neared the gate ever so closer, movement was caught. She gave the rangers a chance to act first before attempting to interact herself, but the closer she got, the more she realized the colors of one of the two bodies. She paused, paw hanging in the air as time almost seemed to stop as well. The wind drew her breath, lungs stagnant as she couldn't catch any air. The world swirled in a mixture of red and gray, vision becoming so honed into the stranger that she felt nothing except fear and anger. Lev Malakh never realized that she was running along the cobbles, nearly tripping and falling onto her back, possibly breaking her neck in the process. She didn't realize the snarl that opened her jaws into malicious teeth wielded as her sword, death ever so closely looming over her like a guardian she mentored.

The mother who lost so much could now smell blood, and the smear upon her child's head sent her reeling into another plane of existence. As Zin gave no words or warning, Lev Malakh did not either, scaling down the wall in a wild leap, galloping over Century in a flustered attempt as teeth tried to strike the brute's neck. If successful, she would rear up onto her back legs, front hugging around in a desperate attempt to throw Traveler off balance. She was small compared, so very much so, but the momentum she had carried could help. Either way, she would hold on, jaw locking as muscles flexed to keep his stranger away from her child.

She couldn't lose any of them.

She couldn't lose any more of them.

ooc; basically she sees the commotion, freezes, goes into Latin Iaera Freedom mode for a moment, realizes its' not working, calls for help and is now between the fighting wolves trying to get Century out of the way.

PROFILE

It was like any other day, another patrol, nothing more. As usual she was deep in thought, wondering about obscure things, criticizing herself, being generally anxious. The typical state of Iaera's mental health, mulling about as if she was trying to walk off her problems. Hiding away from Gemini like she was some sort of leper, she had been here for some time now and knew almost nobody. She both hated and loved it, she didn't have to face rejection but she didn't get to have the closeness she craved. Simply relationships, friends that gather for dinner, lovers that curl up at night, children to adore and dote upon. For it to be her deepest need, she often acted quite counter-productively to this accomplishment. As in, she could be mingling like all the other singles, and here she is, walking the border for the umpteenth time, alone. The irony certainly wasn't lost on her, she just could fight her nature, or perhaps it was fate instead that she couldn't fight.

After all it was the shrieks of a child that roused her from her head, violet eyes suddenly vivid and frightened. It echoed in her ears, it felt familiar. She wasn't sure it was play or fear, but nevertheless the pit of her stomach churned and she moved with some haste. Too close to the wall, too close indeed. Technically not illegal, not on this side, but it made her fur stand on end. Too often lately people had been blatantly trespassing into Gemini's territory, though none had made it past the wall thus far. Today Traveler would make history, but not in a new way, not in a way Gemini hadn't seen before. No, this was like turning on the TV to watch a new episode of the Gemini soap opera and realizing it was a rerun of "Coronation Day", or at least it sure as hell looked like it at the beginning. Too many people turned off the TV then.

As she neared Iaera realized she was certainly not first on the scene, a large man and a woman were already here attacking someone. Attacking someone... Attacking... someone. Violet eyes found Century, laying on the ground, blood smeared across his neck and shoulders. For a moment she went blank, as if someone had restarted their computer. She just looked at him, just stared, teeth were snapping in the air, there was a faint shout elicited from the attacker. They were familiar, oh so familiar, her heart was racing, her tongue was stuck in her throat, her muscles tense. All of a sudden it felt like every scar was bleeding again, all of them, each and every one she gained that night littered beneath her pelt. Her secret shame, her silent suffering, her failure. Her FAILURE. "M-M-Mater..." She croaked, everything was blurry, if ever she was going to see a ghost it was now. As if Style was going to come running through the wall to jump onto the attacker, so that Century could run, run and never look back.

Run and never look back!

"Curre! Noli respicere post tergum!" was it her voice? "Curre liberi!" He wasn't reacting, why wasn't he? Why? Why? Iaera you're in the right book, wrong chapter. This is Century, this isn't you. You run Iaera, you. "CENTURY!" it was a screech, her voice nearly cracking, finally moving into the fray. "Century come here! NOW!" English, English, good. But she was screaming, screaming like she didn't know she could. She'd never been so loud in her life, well... She had one other time, one last scream for mother. Then all that was left was to survive,

survive, survive, survive, survive. She had ran until her legs burned, she had ran until she'd nearly bled out, she'd ran until she couldn't see straight.

Survive. Iaera could do that, she had done it before. She could do that for Century too, survive, and bring him with her. Some point as she dodge past, before seeing an opening to snatch the child, an unusually commanding voice sang out. Sang out for Rangers, for Peacekeepers, for Acolytes, for GEMINI. Unless he moved she intended to make contact with him and force him from his location, Iaera would get Century out.

They would survive together.

There was nothing that disrupted a quiet patrol so perfectly as a child's shriek.

Her pace quickened suddenly, instinctively. The scent of blood on the air hit her quickly and she couldn't help but remember Tauro's bleeding body. Like father, like son, perhaps. But she remembered too what she had sworn to herself that day, the grip of devotion that had bound her to her duty more than every before: never again. Gemini was not meant to be a place with blood on its borders.

The others were ahead of her - she'd come from a little bit further. Her mind snapped into super-focus. One wolf was dealing with saving the child, the other two on the intruder. Good. She felt the old and hungry fire in her chest, screaming, begging - full saboro full saboro full saboro. Her maw parted and she snarled but for a instant she held it in. She was a Ranger here, she had to do something to keep order.

"Subdue him for questioning!" She ordered, knowing by the time she spoke the other two would likely have already struck him.

Only a couple more wolf-lengths and she'd be on the intruder, too. Where Lev went for the neck and Zin for the shoulder, Franky aimed for the haunches. She'd attempt to throw her weight into him with her shoulder, hopefully providing the final push to knock the intruder over if the other who hadn't already. Either way, if he fell, she'd move to bite down on one of his hind legs. She'd attempt to grasp right around the ankle, perhaps biting and tearing more than she needed to. If successful, her hold would allow her to prevent him from getting back up again.

Keep him down.

how long, baby, have i been away?
oh, it feels like ages though you say it's only days
there ain't language for the things i've seen
and the truth is stranger than my own worst dreams
the truth is stranger than all my dreams
oh, the darkness got a hold on me

i have seen what the darkness does
say goodbye to who I was
i ain't never been away so long
don't look back them days are gone

Lev Malakh had a lot to say about Ki Tisa's attentive routine to the border. She had other ideas about how his time should be spent, and they involved humoring children rather than his job. It was her opinion that familial bonds were more important than familial survival.

Bat Kol didn't care what Lev Malakh thought. She continued their routine, day in, day out, on paws that became so used to the varying terrain that they seldom slipped anymore. She watched with eyes attuned to each grove and feature of their horizon. She would guard this place while Ki Tisa slept somewhere deep and dark and unknowing so that, later, he could interact with Lev Malakh's children and not their skulls. Later.

When Bat Kol felt like it.

So she was there, with their hard paws and hard eyes, doing what she'd been doing since the death of Gemini's prince despite Lev Malakh's weightless objections, coming back towards the choke point to begin patrolling within the highlands. She would take the seacliffs, and then she would travel the top of the wall to the other mountains. The plan repeated in their mind, over and over, echoing in occupied corridors and drawing wails of protest from Ein's voice who was tired of listening to this repetitive bullcrap. Can't we have something new? At least sing it or something!

Something new. Or something old.

The squeal of a child, the slick of saliva on teeth, the snarls of something angry and afraid. She turned from her path immediately and beelined for the commotion without a twinge of curiosity or misstep. Something needed doing, and she would do it. That was that. She came upon it quickly, eyes darting to Lev Malakh, to Iaera, to Zin, to Franky, to the giant who should not be here. She did not stop. But she noticed, by the she-wolf Iaera, the child with wounds on his forehead was also a child of obvious lineage—and so Century would meet his uncle today for the first time, face to face, through blood and something very cold.

Cuivre! someone screamed in a different corridor. CUIVRE IS HERE

Cuivre!
Cuivre!
Cuivre!

It's not Cuivre, someone else tried to reason, and Bat Kol knew that, but it was far too late now. She had seen the brother pinned beneath a burning tree in a forest filled with ash and smoke while they struggled and coughed to breathe. She had seen a monster descending on Lev Malakh and trying to drag her back into Saboro's hellscape—

She had seen the insides of that monster's back for daring to try.

Their paws left the ground and their jaw opened wide and ready and gleaming in light. She ignored Franky. There was no point to questions. Everything was clear and full of pieces of fire while the sky fell and crushed them all beneath rock.

She tried to land between the shoulders while the others took pieces, and if she found her perch her paws would clasp and her muzzle would snap down deep into the nape, yanking loose flesh hard enough to rend it from the boy's neck. Through the blood and spit and screaming she turned her gaze toward Century.

We have a red eye too, nephew.

- Ki Tisa, under control of the alter Bat Kol, tries to jump on Traveler's back
- She tries to bite the nape of his neck and tear it off
- Looks at Century and that's probably really traumatizing, im so sorry Century

The Leroy kids know who Ki Tisa is because Lev has told them about him, and they have probably seen him around, but he's never actually interacted with them because he hasn't BEEN Ki Tisa since Coronation Day.

She was there when Tauro and Kariya had been born, the former of the two boys carried to the safety of their exhausted mother's den by her own surprisingly gentle jaws. It was the first step upon her path of redemption, shedding the tough old skin of a vicious and miserable jackdaw-whip to stand exposed as someone who could protect the vulnerable. Serrate and Avery had looked upon each other that chaotic eve after all was said and done and there was an unspoken but powerful understanding between them that things could move on. That the wrongs they'd inflicted upon one another had never been personal. We do bad things. We survive.

She was there when the sons of Gemini had been born and continued to be there as auntie while they grew. She had not, however, been there when they died. On the island, she hadn't even been able to hear the howls and screams. People facing dreadful violence and old gods they could not fight were not saved by deus ex machinas -- that was a mark of stories, idealistic fairy tales --

To hell with that, Gemini said collectively.

"Go to her!" ordered Avery -- when had she gotten here? so difficult to tell for sure, in all this bedlam -- of bloodied little Century, a bit too roughly, indicating the woman who called him in some foreign tongue with a jerk of her head. Hopefully the boy did, even if just automatically in the face of a not-so-happy adult; she would take a split second after to survey the damage and find the culprit. A huge male, brown and red, flanked by one, two, three... four wolves, all of them snapping and furious. One of them, the daughter of hairwoman who'd fought her on the borders, called for interrogation and was ignored. The Cavalier clacked her teeth hard, a tremendous roar of a bark blasting from her open maw --

"SUBDUE HIM FOR QUESTIONING," was her vehement echo of Franky's words, because god damn it, she was not going to have a horrific Saboro-style lynch mob on her watch. If they didn't, she would jump into the fray with a snarl, aiming to latch onto Traveler's throat and drag him bodily backwards, away from the angry crowd -- but if they did --

she'd approach him from the front instead, regarding his pinned body dangerously, head and tail high, eyes blazing like a liquid sunset.

"Start talking. Now."
