Some folks said that if you smile at your own reflection for a few minutes, you will feel happier. Cyanide wanted to rip the throat out of whoever came up with that, because they were all obviously on some really heavy bullcrap. No amount of smiling at himself and his ugly red eye would lift his mood up as he dragged his paws across the dirt, neck craned low as if pushing it up would be too much effort.

He hummed a tune under his breath to occupy himself, keep his head in the game, and keep his mind from wondering off too much. Much like his smaller father, loneliness and paranoia hit the starling a little harder and more commonly than most. Saboro had been going through all types of change, and somehow none of it seemed beneficial for him or his siblings. Some got everything, and the rest were shut down and humiliated. His little, poor brother did not deserve the mental scarring Cyanide knew had been inflicted upon him. And Gray really did not need any more reason to stew in his own rage.

Despite all the changes, it was much less exciting than it sounded. Cyanide felt alone, itching for the company of his boss or hiss siblings or his friends- What friends? Since when did he have anyone to call a friend? A sharp frown tugged at his lips as he finally stopped walking aimlessly around the outer ring. He flopped his silky ass down, and huffed, ears dropped by not pinned back.

It took him a few moments to realize he might not be alone, that he could be being watched. And whoever it was could be ready to tell everyone what an angsty piece of crap was he was being. The Startling's ears perked up, his back straightened, and he looked towards the direction of any footsteps coming his way.

Smiling at reflection may have been bullcrap, but Cyanide knew how to smile very well, all teeth and wrinkles that reached his red eyes.

"Good day."

Elk was not a patroller. She wasn’t the sort to aimlessly wander the various nooks and crannies that made up Saboro’s overall landscape. She was the type to hide herself away, to observe wandering masses, and contemplate the overall scheme of survival. She had plans, though not many, and she had a general agenda, not yet met, but a cluster of aspirations wasn’t what drove her to be present an active about her kingdom. It was an undeniable and yet understand fear of regressing.

She was painfully mundane in any other situation, or so she believed, but that rolling knocking darkness that always grumbled in the pit of her belly would have explained otherwise. To be left to her own devices might have brought about a desire to fall into old and nasty habits. She couldn’t afford to wander the landscape, consuming and pillaging. This wasn’t the abyss. She thought she could help Azi understand that, but even now she often mistook the night for the black of her former home. How could she convince her brother when she could barely convince herself that her entire existence above was more than just an idle dream?

Gah, what a horrible thought, one strong enough to give her pause as she stopped and brushed against a tree. See, this is proof. It’s more than just the haunting song of her country, but it’s the touch of nature, in the idea that this is painfully real that grounds her.

Yes. Perfect.

She might have stayed there for some time, just pressed against the tree with a wide unseeing gaze had she not heard the nearby rustle of foliage that proclaimed another soul was nearby. As introverted as she was it would have been a horrible idea to pass up a moment to practice proper socialization. After all, a shrike-to-be and a tracker-in-training had to be well-spoken.

Hello.” She waddled over, the tension in her body at opposition with the odd lopsided smile she wore. “Good day to you, as well.

Because that was the right thing to say. None of this garbage about whether or not this stranger was also always hungry.

I’m Elk,” She whispered soon after, brow furrowed in focus. Yes, that’s right, she IS Elk. She's doing so well!

Kalypso stepped quietly through the dark tropical rainforest, blue eyes wide in wonder as she took in the strange sights and sounds. Saboro was a place of infinite wonders and mysteries it seemed to her and she wanted so badly to dive into it and explore more, discover what the jungle had to offer. But she was here on official Tortugan business, not to sight see, she reminded herself firmly and took care to stay in the outer rings of the packs.

She may not know as much about their allies as she would like but she was knowledgeable enough to know that Saboro worked on a ring like system and that the inner rings were the most guarded and off limits to visitors and lower ranked members of the pack alike. What a strange system. Kally wanted to know how the gears turned the cog in the machine that was Saboro and what better way than to get to know the locals?

The sound of a soft voice nearby drew her like a beacon and she arrived to find a couple of locals, one of whom was introducing herself. Elk was gorgeous, pale pelt with splotches of burnt orange and dark grey but it was her tail that drew the most attention. Long and flowing like a river it was glorious and if Kalypso had been the jealous type perhaps she would have felt some envy. But instead she simply felt awed by the other females beauty.

Her companion was just as handsome, decked out in complimentary shades of greens and blues with piercing red eyes. Saboro was filled with beautiful people it seemed. Kalypso was usually an outgoing extrovert but suddenly felt extremely nervous, her gut tightening itself into knots, tangling like the vines that dangled from the trees around them. "H-hi," Kally stammered nervously, giving them both a friendly smile as she stepped around the trunk of the tree she'd been observing them behind. "I'm Kalypso. Uh, everyone calls me Kally though. I'm from Tortuga." If they gave her a confused look she would hurry to elaborate, "I came to escort the betrothed over." Ocean blue eyes peered around in the dim lighting and she tried for some light humor, "It's uh, a little darker than I had imagined."

Today was a day just for her and Sectumsempra~

Serpensortia, the python, stayed behind and slithered off to do... well whatever snakes did when they were alone. Cruciatus knew he wouldn't go far, and that he knew where their den was. Their bond was close, and one she cherished on a daily basis. But occasionally she did like to just run off, though today the little cobra on her back insisted on staying with her. So with a happy croon, the Nightwalker made her way down from the fourth ring, bouncing along the steps going down from the temple and tossing wide grins to any Jackdaws that flashed their pelts through the brush that lined the steps. "Keep it up!" she exclaimed to no one in particular as she hopped along.

She was confident, secure in her place in Saboro. Her tattoos spoke volumes, too. Either way, soon she was in the second ring, at which she left the steps and leaped into the brush. Cruciatus wove through the trees, the cobra on her back using the back of her head to break the wind that blew onto it. She was aware of their constantly changing temperatures, so she knew soon she would have to pick a sunny spot to stand in so it could warm up.

Sounds of other voices alerted her though, and she looked in the direction it came from. Surprise surprise, wolves in ring two. The Nightwalker normally didn't interact much in the second ring, but hey, maybe it was something interesting. "Ready to see some others in this jungle, hmmmmmm?" she crooned to her snake pal, who only leaned forward to tickle her with the flickering tongue. Cruciatus giggled before looking forward again and trotting over with all the confidence in the world. Once she caught sight of who the voices belonged to, she glanced at each face. Nope, none she recognized.

"I'm Kalypso. Uh, everyone calls me Kally though. I'm from Tortuga." Oh?? Tortuga eh?? The Nightwalker definitely recognized that name. "I came to escort the betrothed over. It's uh, a little darker than I had imagined." Cruciatus laughed out loud at this, coming into the little area now, spots of sunlight revealing her through the thick canopy. "I'd say it's simply perfect," she said, looking at Kaypso as she spoke. Despite her grin, her red eyes pierced through as she looked hard at those around her. "Adjusted yet from the beach?" If the other looked surprised, she'd simply wink at her. "You're not the only one who's traveled." And you're welcome for the land, Tortugan.

But one thing did intrigue her, as she looked the other up and down. "Who are the betrothed? Come to get married or something?" Wolves from Tortuga coming to marry wolves from Saboro? Huh. Interesting.

“Hello. Good day to you, as well. I’m Elk.”

Oh, well, this was a strange girl. Elk was as pretty as girls got for Cyanide, though she seemed horribly shy, almost unsure of her own name for a second, not as confident with herself as Cyanide was. Maybe with some encouragement she could be, confident and soft, Cyanide thought. before he could reply with more than just a smile, his ears picked up another wolf approaching, but his smell told him this was different.

"H-hi," the stranger girl said. She was nervous, though he didn't peg her for shy. "I'm Kalypso. Uh, everyone calls me Kally though. I'm from Tortuga. I came to escort the betrothed over." his ears twtiched and perked up, licking his teeth like he learned from his boss.

"Nice to meet you both, I'm Cyanide. I'ma Shrike. Therapist, if you will." and a little more. "Never been outside, is Tortuga much different?" with how the girl was looking around, he figured it was nothing alike.

"It's uh, a little darker than I had imagined."

Despite his sour mood, it pulled a laugh out of the green Saboran. "I guess. Depends where you go, there's a bunch of clearings, and the sun can get real hot sometimes. Other times, it's lots of rain. A little chaotic, but you get used to it. We have to, after all." from the edge of his eye he saw someone approach, all covered in red tattoos. One of their walkers, he figured. They went all over the place, he was sure that one knew where Tortuga was at the very least.

"I'd say it's simply perfect,"

Cyanide snorted. "Maybe for you, but I like some sun. Gotta keep this hair luxurious." he teased.

"Who are the betrothed? Come to get married or something?"

Good question, Cyanide turned to watch the blue girl again, though with a friendly nod, invited Elk to join in on their little gathering. After all, the girl would never get more confident and social if she wasn't allowed in. Once they were all comfortably near each other, Cyanide took a seat, sitting straight and smiling as always.

"Betrothals get new blood in. Hopefully it keeps em' loyal too, eh? But Tortuga is an old friend, am I right? Should be just dandy."

For a moment, she held her breath, muscles till tense and gaze still a tad too wide, but as the group settled into an almost natural conversation that settled some tight thing in her chest. So, she slowly moved to sit, exhaling a great deal of air before inhaling deeply. This was fine, almost peaceful, and the lull of Saboro’s constant vibrancy was a welcomed relief.

She turned to the stranger and listened to her speak right before a tattoo covered citizen approached them and continued it. She’s silent, a frown set to wrinkle her muzzle as she tried to attach their phrases to things that held any meaning for her. Unfortunately, she has a very small library of experience to draw on and it’s not long before she’s looking to the trio with a more curious expression among the anxiety in her bones.

I’m sorry, ah… Tortuga?” What was that? “Beech. Ess?

She lifts a paw to lightly scratch at her chest, “I’m not familiar with those terms.” For her, the most she understood was the blanket of darkness that had kept her prisoner for the past few summers—or, however long. She hadn’t been able to get a good number on how long she’d been missing.

I’m also a shrike…” New and fresh and not all that good, not yet, “W-what is it like? O-outside?

What's it like, coming here?

"Is it... difficult to... love someone?" Urk, wait that's not what she meant, "I mean, to be betrothed to someone?"

"I guess. Depends where you go, there's a bunch of clearings, and the sun can get real hot sometimes. Other times, it's lots of rain. A little chaotic, but you get used to it. We have to, after all."

Kally nodded her head, it sounded about as ever changing and unpredictable as the tropical forest back home. "I'd say it's simply perfect," Kalypso jumped in surprise at the voice that came from behind her and she turned her head to see a young wolf adorned in red tattoos standing in a beam of sunlight. Was that a snake on her head? Kally couldn't help but to outright stare at the tattoos in open admiration. Why didn't the others have tatoos like this one?

"Maybe for you, but I like some sun. Gotta keep this hair luxurious." Cyanide joked and Kalypso gave a soft chuckle, she liked his sense of humor. "Who are the betrothed? Come to get married or something?" Cyanide took a seat and she took that as her social que to take her own and settled down onto her haunches. She was about to open her mouth to answer when the pretty blue and green boy answered for her, "Betrothals get new blood in. Hopefully it keeps em' loyal too, eh? But Tortuga is an old friend, am I right? Should be just dandy." Kalypso gave him a dazzlingly smile, impressed that he knew so much about the situation. It was obvious that Cyanide cared for his pack and kept track of the on-goings of its members and important happenings. That was good.

“I’m sorry, ah… Tortuga?”

Kalypso turned to see Elk had crept closer and taken her own seat but she wore a puzzled expression. “Beech. Ess?” Kally nodded and gently corrected the pretty hellion girl, "Yep. Beaches." Elk lifted a paw to scractch at her chest, obviously confused. “I’m not familiar with those terms.” That made sense to her, they were very far from the coast line in this jungle and she couldn't expect all the members of Saboro to be as well traveled as she was. “W-what is it like? O-outside? Is it... difficult to... love someone? I mean, to be betrothed to someone?"

Kalypso narrowed her gaze as she considered Elk's question, mulling it over in her mind to come up with an appropriate response. "Well, I wouldn't imagine so. Like Cyanide said, Tortuga is an old friend of Saboro's and we see these Betrothals as something that will make us even better friends. Strengthening each others packs, ya know? No one is forcing anyone to fall in love its just.." Kalypso struggled momentarily to find the word she was looking for before she landed on it, "It's a partnership, meant to bond us closer together, keep our alliance strong." That was the theory at least.

"And to answer your other question, outside, at least where I come from, it's beautiful."

Her lips softened into a loving smile as she talked about her home. "There's these great big beaches, which are large stretches of soft sand." Did they have sand here? "Sand's like dirt but not as solid, your feet sorta sink in when you walk. Anyways, the beach lines the edge of the sea, which is this HUGE body of water that's always crashing against the shore." Her eyes were sparkling, "It makes a wonderful song." Realizing she was getting carried away and beginning to ramble she cleared her throat awkwardly and gave them a sheepish smile. She was here to learn about them, not blabber on and on about herself.

"So, what is a Shrike?" Blue eyes were drawn back to the one covered in tattoos again and she couldn't help but ask, "and what do you do?" And why are you covered in tattoos? She had so many questions for her new friends.

Cruciatus watched the other three, taking in all the information gathered before her. Cyanide, a Shrike. Kalypso, or Kally, the Tortugan escorting betroths into Saboro. The third girl she had missed the name before her entrance, so she remained an unknown for the time being. "Maybe for you, but I like some sun. Gotta keep this hair luxurious." Cruciatus glanced at the green one who spoke, and she grinned back with a toss of her head. "Seems to work wonders for you, Cyanide," she returned, tail swaying behind her before turning her attention to the others.

Cyanide explained the betrothals though, and she cocked an ear to it. Huh. Dandy. Interesting way to describe it, she guessed. Over time she noticed Kalypso staring at her tattoos, and it made red eyes turn to her and stare back with a grin. Like what you see, yes? The young one's questions though (not like Cruciatus wasn't young herself) made her shift her gaze back to the others. "The beach has a large body of water, pretty salty if ya ask me," she offered, though it might just confuse Elk even more. Cruciatus wasn't the best teacher after all. Kally on the other hand explained the betrothals.

Cruciatus had some opinions about what she said, but for once held her tongue. She had been taught from a young age that alliances were to be respected. But she couldn't keep herself all quiet. "Though I also find an interchange of knowledge and assistance is just as efficient as an alternate way to bring more bodies to both parties." She gazed at the Tortugan, watching her response. When it came down to it, that's really what it was. A difference of opinion, perhaps?

The Nightwalker listened then to the other's explanation of the beaches. "Gotta give it to ya, you said it much better than I did," she admitted with an easy laugh. Well, they did live there. Perhaps Tortuga was more romantic about their land than Saboro was. Cruciatus was rather... crude in her descriptions.

"So, what is a Shrike?" She heard the question, but knew it wasn't hers to answer. Instead she tilted her head and looked at Cyanide and Elk. "Your turn," she said to them, as though passing on the baton of information for their little gathering. "and what do you do?" Oh? A question for her? Cruciatus now turned red eyes to Kalypso, her head steady as the cobra poked its head too, as though wondering what the Nightwalker was going to say. "I gather information for the pack," she answered simply, easy for her to fill in the blanks of her tasks. Without giving too much away. "My purpose is to better Saboro with the knowledge I can gather and bring back~"

Call me a collector of wisdom, if you will.

The chatter was pleasant, a curious conversation between three young people from various backgrounds. Cyanide was fascinated, and excited to be surrounded by so many... Relaxed faces. Socializing has been difficult as of late, and he felt so damn alone. The thought on its own was enough to put a wet towel over Cyanide's mood again, though he did his best to not let his friendly demeanor and smile falter.

Instead he focused on Kalypso, and her excited explanation of the outside world, and Tortuga's beaches. He knew of beaches and the sea, but had never seen either one himself. They sounded pleasant, though he figured there was always a catch behind things like that. Saboro was beautiful in its own way, lush and mysterious and full of plant life. Even the volcano was a wonder. But the land acted up, the volcano spewed lava. There was always a trade off for beauty.

Soon the conversation turned to him and Elk, though Cyanide was prepared to do most of the talking. "My turn it is," he started. "Shrikes are like therapists. We're here to make sure everyone is in tip top shape mentally and emotionally. And to correct any problems that might come up." a sugarcoated description of their job, sure. "We help our pack mates become the best they can be so they can be the best for Saboro." no need to talk about their occasional spying, the fact that they will sometimes casually sniff out patients instead of waiting for them to come to them.

Cyanide then nodded back to the Nightwalker, watching a little cautiousness as the cobra perked up as well.

"Well put." Cyanide chuckled. "I think you're the first Nightwalker I've met, actually, now that I think of it. You all make yourself very hard to spot, despite, you know. Being a walking tattoo." another laugh, this one covered by a paw.

"Well, what else can I educate you on? I also work as a Starling, just border patrol. My dad is an Alchemist, a healer that also works with poisons. Father is, you know, out there being king, not the most interesting job description if you ask me. Most of my other siblings are the fighting types, you'd have to ask Leaf about our army if you're into that sort of thing." he waved his paw dismissively. He had never been to interesting in fighting, though he liked to keep fit around the borders. Explaining those ranks in detail was beyond his jurisdiction.

"They're all probably real similar, I think. What's your leadership called, anyway? Tortugi and Tartugo?" he snickered, well aware that it was probably not anything to do with their name in  the first place.
