Somewhere in the initial scurry, Akira got away from him. That in itself was damaging to his pride—he was, after all, so much taller than them. How could any of them escape him with his superior vantage point? But, alas, she had, much like a single wildebeest in the herd. He’s left bewildered and agitated and without the person he’s deemed Important. With a lashing tail, he departs from the initial greeting area before he could be engaged in conversation. He was no diplomat. He wasn’t here to strengthen ties with this foreign land. He was only here for one thing—and that thing had squirmed between his claws before he realized it.

SIGH!!!

He distances himself from the travelers. He wants space from those happy, rambunctious children. They gun for each other first, naturally. He can hear their battles even here—TIME TO WALK EVEN FURTHER AWAY FROM THAT. So walk he does. Past orchards of violet, violet trees. Past the screams of children, it was quiet. He has not found a quiet like this in a long time. The savannah had been plagued by the constant buzz of locusts. The stony shorelines and soaring cliffs reflected the roar of the ocean and the jeers of circling seabirds. The castle echoed late into the night—the clicking of nails on stone, the drip of musty water.

Quiet spaces always had soft, unavoidable noises. Where was the noise, he wonders, his skin prickling as he travels further into unfamiliar lands. Forest gives way to plains. Not even the birds sing, he notices, his eyes narrowing in the steady sun. Out and away from the old trees and their roots, he begins to tread on disturbed soil. The earth is freshly churned. Some of it sticks to his paws as he moves on. He treads upon the bodies of soldiers lost; he has never seen a grave before. Still, the further he walks, the more apparent it becomes. He knows what death feels like—and Inaria has seen it.

He decides to turn around when he finds the river. He stops and bends his head to drink—the sun made him hot, soaking into his mane and sticking around him like a shroud. He bows, preparing to drink his fill when the scent hits him. He recoils from the water, pupils slit to lines. Even now, the water carried a parting gift from what had so recently happened here. He knows it. The floods of Alteron. The bloated corpses that floated on the water, caught in branches and left to rot. War. It was war.

He backs away from the river, lips peeling from his teeth in a bitter grimace. He knew they did not belong here, and now he had all the evidence he would ever need. He turns from the poisoned drink and curses himself for coming so far into this unknown place—what needed doing was getting out. He would find her and carry her from here by force if he must. She was not ready for war.

Aeolus

He had been in the background when the party had arrived despite being a Page, one of Inaria's ambassadors, and instead slipped into the role of his second rank of Sentinel, a guardian of the borders, as there were already others present to manage the formal welcoming and speech giving that such an occasion warranted . When the ceremonies were through though and the collective individuals had begun to split up and go separate ways he had watched for a moment, divided between his dual ranks that required him to be in two different places. In the end he decided on a compromise, he would finish his patrol along this border to ensure none wishing to cause harm had followed their allies thus fulfilling his Sentinel duties and then he would go and fulfil his duties as a Page. It did not take long but oeven so all that was left when his patrol was finished was the scent trails. There were many to choose from but after the war and the fact that a cat had been among the Saboran's he was not sure how welcoming his fellow Inaria's would be of a large cat and so that was the scent he chose to follow. He was making good time when he heard the sounds of what sounded like a fight, even though it did sound like their younger visitors, he paused debating on whether to go and intervene or not since despite being a Page he didn't really have experience with pups. He knew such a thing should not be allowed to continue and was about to head in that direction but the sounds of shouting dissipated and as there were no further shrieks that might indicate the fight had stopped due to something going horribly wrong he decided it was safe to assume that either another adult had broken it up that things had simply been worked out. He would make a note to try and find out though just in case especially since it was also part of his job to find out.

Once again he was following the trail of the great cat growing more and more concerned about it meeting with an unpleasant welcoming from someone here and so he began rushing to try and find the great cat before any others. As he followed the trail he became aware that it was heading closer and closer to one of the areas that he himself had determined to be hazardous during the war until the great cleansing project the pack had undertaken. It seemed so..his mind searched for a way to describe how it felt to be back in this area where he had tried so hard to save lives only to watch them slip away from him. He could not find a way to describe it though and as there was a lack of an audience wishing for such a description he let it go and instead pushed the memories of those unpleasant days as far away from the here and now as he could. He sped up a little to try and make up for his distraction coming around a tree just in time to see the lion bent over the water that had so many unpleasant memories for him. He could even still smell the scent of tainted water he shook it away though as being part of his memories, memories he did not have time for and didn't wish to dwell on anyway. He started to call out but the lion had jerked his head back up and was stalking away already so decided to try and catch up and so he picked up the pace heading straight for the cat feeling more comfortable with them than might be expected from a wolf, especially an Inarian who had taken part in the war. There was something nagging at him though, there was something that was not quite right.

He couldn't place it at first but then it struck him. The scent of death was not coming from his memories, it was here..and now. His mind began working quickly and with frustration. How had this happened?! How had they missed this?! How had he missed this?! He was a Page and a Sentinel, he had helped with the clean up he should have caught this! He hadn't though. No one had and now damage control was needed and needed urgently. "Did you drink any of the water there?". He asked concerned for the felines safety. "I can locate or summon a healer for you if you did". He offered hoping he did not offend the great cat by his question and it could be seen as implying he thought the male was not inteeligent enough to recognize dirty water but as much as he didn't want a bad reflection to be cast on his new home by offending a visiting ally it would cast an even poorer light on Inaria if aid was not offered to that ally who might become sick due to a lapse in Inarian management.

Which on the subject of water.."If you are still thirsty I can guide you to water that is safe to drink and if the healer deems you are well, should there be a need to summon one, I can show you many places that you may safely enjoy while you visit". That should cover everything right? Oh..right. His name. He'd been so concerned about addressing their visitor's safety that he'd forgotten to introduce himself. How embarrassing. "My name is Aeolus by the way". He introduced himself, finally, with an embarrassed smile as he then had nothing left to do but wait for the other to reply to know whether to summon a healer or not.

It was hard to keep track of all the children. Hard enough that she, Lynx, needed a break from tracking them down and ensuring they weren't clawing someone's throat out. Their sibling's, or Inaria's, or Gemini's.. it didn't matter, the leopard was exhausted wrangling a red-eyed squirt especially, and keeping his mouth quiet. Food. It was always food with Aspen, and she hoped it would be enough for his siblings, too..

A quick shake of her head let all of that slip away, a flash of cream and a thin tail caught her eyes, and she was soon stalking a new subject. A new beast, one she felt guilty for even looking at, having come from where she had. A lion, here in Inaria, and one she followed fervently until they got to the stream. Jonas was a new fascination, a new dangerous thing she could watch from afar and observe, taking notes for no one specifically besides herself. It almost made her nauseous to watch him.

Or was that the smell that she had so carelessly ignored? The lion seemed indifferent to it, until he dipped his head to water, and before she could start a conversation about it, someone interrupted.

A wolf of black and white and gold tips began prattling on about a healer, about something connected to the water that could potentially make it necessary for one, even.. His name was Aelous, and the leopard was more interested in his information than a new watering hole. From the shadows she slid, investigating the water and curling her lips in a silent hiss. This was disgusting, putrid, and much worse than a sweaty foot, but..

"Do the.. children.. have access to this?" to her, to Jonas, to Aeolus, it was obvious that this water was unsanitary, but to some idiot child who welcomed the scent of roadkill, well.. "Aeolus.. what happened?" Lynx felt sick to her stomach, backing away from the water- should she find it urgent enough, she would gather up the kids and shoo them out of this place. This place of vibrant color, this place that made her feel homesick for the dying woodland she was so familiar with.

He turns from the water and finds himself in the path of a strange wolf. He stops, lips curled disdainfully from his teeth. The taste of death was stuck to the roof of his mouth and anger brews in his gut as the wolf dares to ask him if he drank. “No,” he responds soft, almost curt. He listens to the wolf prattle on, mouth slightly parted and exhaling hot, humid air. His heart beats a bit out of tune and he looks (rudely!) past his host, towards the way he came. He saw, now, that the earth was churned and he rumbles unhappily.

Let me stop you right there, Aeolus.

Water free of death?” he prompts, stepping forward to bear down on the smaller creature—but he stops. Someone else is there. He spares a glance for Lynx, and then another. He double takes not because she is odd, but because she is the first cat he’s seen in a long time. He’s not sure what to make of her, but he sees his concern echoed back at him. He turns back to Aeolus and continues, voice low, “You are from here? This Inaria?” He gestures with a slight twist of one large paw. “Why are there dead in the water?” He asks, glancing again towards the other cat, his eyes wide.

You have brought children here,” he says slowly, allowing it to sink in. “I did not drink the water,” he adds, head swinging back towards the wolf. “But the cubs are stupid and do not know the scent of their own death.” He growls softly, “Will your healers help them?” he challenges, less willing to wait for information like Lynx before him. But he was thinking of his princess, of the children she called her siblings, the ones she called her friends, her peers. “This place is not safe,” he declares, tail lashing behind him.

He looks past the wolf again. To the plains, the trees beyond them. His muscles tense and he fights back the urge to spring over the supposed Inarian. To run, to grab up those precious to him, to flee this place and never permit them to return. This had been a mistake, he knew it now. The children played, ignorant of the futures being penned meticulously for them. Coming here would set something terrible in motion, something beyond him spelled in fallen violet leaves.

His jaw quivers.

He was slightly relieved to hear that the visitor had not drank the water but that did not ease his frustration that this patch had been missed in the clean up. Now though was probably not the time to express such frustrations as it had not escaped him that the tone that had been used was not a pleased one. When the great cat moved forwards asking about water free from death that all but confirmed it for him that the lion was not happy and instead was rather a bit upset much like himself. Another cat appears shortly and she also seems unhappy about the water, which was understandable but also meant he had yet another ally to try and explain to when he really didn't have any explanations. This was something that should not have been missed. There wasn't much he could do about it now though that he had not already done. Then the lion asked if he was from here. "Yes I am an Inarian". He answers trying to think of what else to say as he knows something must be said. Before he could formulate anything to say more questions are asked. From the lion why were there dead in the water, from the leopard do children have access to this place and an echoing of the lion's question of what had happened here. There were many ways he could answer that question but he needed to choose the right one if there was a right one. In this situation though he didn't know if any answer would be able to fix even half of what was wrong here.

He would just have to do the best he could though as it was his job and since the lion's further comments and questions showed an understandable concern for children who did not know better. "I understand your concern for children's safety as I and the rest of Inaria share those concerns as well. The younger children who would not know better are not supposed to venture here on their own without an adult but the older children would have access to this area. I am not sure how this was missed but you have my sincerest apologies on behalf of Inaria that this has occurred and I thank you for bringing this horrific mistake to my attention. I assure you it will be dealt with and corrected immediately to ensure no harm befalls any of your children while they are visiting". Hopefully that would be enough to soothe them, at least as much as would be possible to soothe them as this was a horrific mistake that he still could not figure out how it had occurred but he did intend to correct it immediately by removing the remains himself if he could though he didn't think it would be exactly proper to do so while their guests were watching or maybe..he really wasn't sure what else to do here.

"You have brought children here," a glance from the lion to the wolf to the water to the side. If she had thought about it, she would've realized he was speaking out loud and not asking a question, but.. the leopard.. coughed gently. "..Yes," necessary to respond, she did not want to be.. rude. It was fortunate that he felt the same danger she did, though, and assumed the place as unsafe. Relief that someone else felt the same way, and perhaps a little more so at the idea it came from distant genetic kin.

Jonas' skull was large. Lynx recalled the one bare of flesh and fur tucked protectively so in a tree back home, that she adoringly spoke to in the middle of the night and slept with. It was her friend.. and perhaps.. this lion, too..

The wolf spoke. It prattled on and on and on until Lynx could take no more, holding up a paw and clearing her throat. "You say this area is limited, you tell us it is difficult for a young one, a wee one, a small wolf child to get here, and yet.." the paw branched out from her to the lion, "We are not wolves, we are not small, we are not.. children.. we are here.." Did he understand? She was calling out Inaria's security, its prevention, its guards.. As for the history lesson.. Lynx was not aware of her own tail lashing behind her, fluffed in irritation. She could not pinpoint just what exactly had made her so angry about all of this, but she was.

"You had a war.. you dogs.. and you think.. 'let us bring together children from another pack, let us mix, let us share bonds.. but not.. clean up.. the mess...'" ears flattened to her skull while lips curled in disgust. "If my children see this, if any of my pups have come in contact with.. this.." a general gesture to the rot and bile and garbage amassed in a river.. her fur bristled and posture tense in a silent threat.

And Aeolus continued on, assuring her (and Jonas alike) that even Inaria's puppies had been afflicted by this as well! Oh! The relief! "Your children.. are not my responsibility," as they were cursed to be born in a warzone, but that was not her problem. Her problem now came from the terror and sickness that emanated from a lack of janitorial duties.

This was a steaming hot mess. He could hear the voices before he could see their owners, and the sigh that left his chest was a heavy one. They had drank the water infected with the dead. Remus had only returned to Inaria's violet forest in the last few months, and the results of the war had been stark around him. Why had the dead not been removed? Burned? Infection was a real problem, especially in a warm, muggy forest like Inaria. The snows were not cold enough to kill off the worst of the bugs, and they had children in their midst. They were all strangers: from different packs, he assumed. The Inarian page, Aeolus, was spewing nonsense which solved nothing, and Remus took it upon himself to clean up the boy's mess.

The Scholar stepped out into the midst, giving a nod to the felines - gosh, they were large - and then bowing his head deeply. He did not immediately introduce himself. There were more pressing matters at hand. He held himself like a wolf that knew the forest like the back of his hand - which he did. He had grown up here. Had a family here. His absence, travelling across the Reach, Tjenu, Nardir, had not pushed the memories of this place out of his mind. He knew it.

"This is unacceptable." He said, simply, gesturing to the water, and giving it a slight frown. "And will be dealt with. There is no excuse-" he turned to look at Aeolus, giving him a firm frown, "- for incompetency. These bodies were missed, but they should not have been." His upper lip curled a little. Did Aeolus really think any of this was explainable by petty excuses? The war, from his understanding, had been around a year ago. And there were still the remnants of rotting dead in the land. What had Inaria been thinking?

"We have just acquired a new head Healer. He's far more adequete than the last, and I'll alert him to the possibility of sickness in the guests. Our herb piles are well-stocked and the healers are good at their jobs - I will personally ensure that you bring no sickness back home with you," his voice was laced with deep regret. This was some crap that needed some serious mopping. "In the meantime, I'll contact the Captain and ask for the help of the pack's soldiers in scouring the rivers for any more dead, and guarding this area, to keep away any wandering souls. This is our fault, and we will resolve it," he gave another deep nod to them. They were honoured guests. They would be treated with respect. Aeolus was an ambassador - how did he not understand the importance of diplomacy?

"Aeolus," the scholar turned, "Would you be so kind as to contact your superior? The Emissary needs to know that this has happened." He gave a firm nod to his fellow pack-mate, then glanced back at the felines.

"I'm sorry; I realise an apology will not solve any of this, but I truly believe it is needed."

((well I kinda had the wrong timeline since I thought that the war ending and the ally visits were like..only a week or two apart instead of months apart and so went ahead and edited for that as per the PSA Kay posted about the timeline but the difference in timeline also changed the way Aeolus would have responded to everything so I edited for that as well))
