shipwrecked [acceptance]
« on: July 19, 2016, 09:05:49 PM »
How many times did one have to fall before they couldn't get back up again? Was the number limited or infinite? Did you need to keep a tally just to be safe? Kahali had tried to recount. His fall was being taken from his mother. His fall was learning to love and hate his guardian. His fall was an unexpected push and the ocean water rushing up to meet him.

For minutes, hours, or days, that raging water had caged him, becoming his walls, his master, and his world. It was in his ears, his mouth, his eyes, trying to steal his very soul from him. He couldn't breathe – he couldn't breathe!

Until all of a sudden... he could, the raging surface of the ocean finally breaking, his ragged breath finding him in heaving gasps. The current soon gentled, the soft waves carrying him onto something soft but blessedly solid. Land, his mind distantly supplied. The water that had seemed so intent on drowning him earlier had brought him to land. Kahali didn't know what to think. He wasn't even sure he could.

But he wouldn't let it drag him back again, no, and so he crawled, crawled forward on drenched, shaking legs until the frothing, cold fingertips couldn't wrap around him anymore. Completely exhausted, he collapsed onto the black shore, floating in the shallows of consciousness, too tired in that moment to even think or move. He blinked, pale lilac gaze struggling to focus, before he took a deep, gurgling breath and closed them.

Heaven... was this heaven?

The only thing he was aware of was the sudden cacophony of senses weaving in wild orchestra all around him. The smell of earth and salt, the distant battle of the ocean behind him, the piercing cry of some unknown bird soaring overhead. Every sound ricocheted in his head, an amplified buzzing that greedily sank their teeth into his battered body. But Kahali didn't feel any pain.

He was just tired.

Shuddering, he curled up in the sand and drifted between consciousness and sleep, letting the lullaby of the world wash over him.

Hopefully it would help him forget.

she wasn't really sure why she was doing this but it seemed appropriate. the beach always looked beautiful from a distance, but then there was the water. it went on as far as she could see, even from the cliffs, and it made her swallow hard. today is the day, kallie. the day you conquer your fears. and without hesitate, she moved down the treacherous path to the beach - it wasn't dangerous to her, at least. mountains were the least of her worries.

the sand itself felt weird. the way it made her feet sink and when it wrapped around her toes - urgh. she felt like she was sinking. the smell of the sea made her nose burn, and the breeze blew all her fur out of her face and gave her chills. nothing had made her cold in a long time, and in her surprised, she squinted at the horizon. the sea was already a horrible place, she had decided. but she made a choice, and she was going to continue it until the end, even if the ending was a bad one.

she walked towards the shoreline and high-stepped, her body swaying slightly as if she were drunk. her face was completely serious as she approached the waves, listening to their ferocity as they broke and crashed only mere feet in front of her. when the calm tide came and lapped at her ankles, she was fine. in fact, it felt kind of nice. she smiled and splashed around, dancing in the water with pleasure. this wasn't so bad!

just as she was getting comfortable, though, a wave roared in protest. it began to break and roar towards her, making her eyes widen in horror. her comfort was replaced by complete fear, and before it could swallow her whole and drag her to the depths, she took off running as fast as she could in this damned sand. she kicked a lot of it up behind her before finally launching, large paws useless on this specific terrain. it was frustrating, and even more so when her leg got caught, sending her flying over the obstruction and crashing face first into the ground.

she growled and grumbled as she sat up, looking back over her shoulder at what had tripped her. she couldn't tell at first - had sand gotten in her eyes because that was all she could see. upon closer inspection, though, she could see the... canine breathing! how long he had been here she didn't know, and how she hadn't noticed, well, she didn't know that either. but she watched him shivering and shaking, probably because it was soaking wet, and kallie immediately felt pity. she frowned and nestled herself gently over him - hoping her warm coat would help him feel better. she got comfortable - resting her face on his and closing her eyes.

Time drifted and the sun shifted. The wind changed. The lullaby of the world gradually softened. Distantly, Kahali thought he heard the rumbling voice of the ocean begin to whisper, calling for him. He even thought he felt a shadow pass over him at some point too, stumbling and grumbling. But he ignored it, ignored all of it, suddenly only aware of one thing in that moment.

Warm...

He was warm.

"What the eff," he croaked in confusion, his voice a little bit muffled beneath all the thick fur covering him. His mind, still half submerged in whispering dreams and soothing earth songs, struggled to find clarity, struggled to make sense of what was happening. Something was covering him, he slowly realized. And whatever it was was blissfully, comfortingly warm – and heavy. Very heavy.

Scrunching up his face in confusion, Kahali reluctantly opened his pale lilac eyes, and noticed the blurry outline of a paw resting by his face. A paw that most definitely wasn't his. A horrified, pregnant pause followed, and then his ears finally registered the owner of the paw's soft breaths. His nose inhaled her sweet, unfamiliar scent. Slowly, gradually... the young boy realized. And he wasn't pleased.

"What the eff," he repeated, a little bit louder.

Suddenly, it didn't matter how weak or tired Kahali was in that moment. Some strange woman was trying to smother him! What the hell. Was this how she brought down her prey? By suffocating them with her mountainous coat of fur?! It was completely unacceptable. It pissed him off! Practically frothing at the mouth with rage, he struggled to get out from under her, but the added weight (and blissful, blissful warmth) only made him feel even more tired.

Naturally, this only pissed him off even more. He turned his head to glare sharply at her, snarling.

"You fat ass bitch, get OFF!"

Poor Kalliope. It seemed the young, shivering boy she was trying to warm up didn't understand the concept of being helped. But how could he? This was the first time he'd ever received it.

No – the only thing Kahali understood in that moment was that he wasn't ready to die.

she had grown quite comfortable lying there. their chests heaved at the same time as he relaxed due to her warmth. she was borderline asleep, but words leaving his lips had made her ear twitch. she wasn't sure what she had heard, but a single eye opened to inspect her charge. she couldn't see much, and he didn't seem to move under her so she thought nothing of it. as long as he was comfortable, so was she!

what the eff...

it was louder that time. her eyes both opened, her head lifting and inspecting the wolf beneath her. what was he doing?! he wriggled and writhed, and she continued to remain balanced on top of him with a confused look on her face. was he upset that she had been keeping him warm? what was she doing wrong?

she frowned, but it quickly turned into a grimace when he snarled.

You fat ass bitch, get OFF!

she stood up, purposefully kneading her claws into him as she stepped off, shaking her thick coat to rid of anything she could have picked up from him. she didn't understand his anger, but it was quick to ignite her own. "i'm not fat," she growled. if he wanted to be ungrateful, that was just fine. "but if you want to call me a bitch, i'll act like one!" the curse was awkward on her lips - kallie was not such a vulgar creature.

"for your information, stupid, you were lying here all cold and alone. to make sure you didn't die i was trying to keep you warm! but if you don't want my help, then.... whatever! die!" she grumbled something under her breath about him being ungrateful, stupid, and downright annoying. who did this guy think he was?! kallie didn't deserve to be spoken to like that, poor thing.

she turned away from him and began to walk off, but she paused and looked over her shoulder at him. "maybe you should go back where you came from - where ever that is!" harumph!
